@gnomon I thought it was short! Was expecting a year wait. So far so good, it seems to work better than the Bazzite and Nobara systems I"ve set up for myself. They've dialed in the whole setup so HDR and screen resolutions just work.

On Sep 4 I placed an order for a Steam Machine (512GB with Controller). It arrived to me in California today. Nothing special, no pre-order or anything, just regular shipping time.

This was AI coded over a couple of half day sessions. A lot of the design came from the AI too. This is the first project where instead of giving precise instructions I asked Claude to come up with its own ideas. I still shaped it but it's a little unsettling how many good ideas the AI had. Like […]

New product: a page for all my book reviews. This started as Goodreads data but significantly improved in presentation, including neat controls for slicing and sorting.

@robey there's various phone → desktop tools that can sorta do this, but without the automated copy and paste. Ironically KDE Connect refuses to actually forward the 6 digit codes flagging them as security sensitive :-(

Happy update: the Nobara updater problem is fixed and it fixed the disk layout on its own. Also I cleared the cache and worked around the repo problem. Linux can fail in mysterious ways but often there are mysterious-but-effective fixes.

Feeling a little entitled and grouchy about Nobara Linux today. It's a great distribution and a remarkable achievement from mostly one developer. But there's a sense that the update mechanism is brittle and can break systems. He launched something new last week where updates are deferred until […]

One weird thing about working with Claude: I'm often losing track of the big picture and trusting the AI to keep notes for me. It has a working memory of big tasks we've deferred and how they fit together and it is regularly reminding me of the big picture I have a hard time holding in my head […]

@robey it's cool that you're working on this! One thing I've never understood: rsync has built into it a binary diff algorithm to try to figure out smallest set to transfer via edits. Did you get into that? I worked with some guy 20 years ago who invented new algorithms for that and it got me […]

@waldoj do you know Robin Garcia from C'ville? She's taking a job I care about here in Nevada County.

SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival Marks 25 Years with Commemorative Poster Art by Fest Co-Founder Kathy Dotson and a New Music Partnership with Madcap Records
**NEVADA COUNTY, CA, September 23, 2026** — Nevada County Arts & Culture has named Robin Garcia, Ph.D., as its next Executive Director, beginning October 1, following a four-month search that drew nearly 140 applicants. Robin Garcia succeeds Eliza Tudor, who is stepping down after ten years as Executive Director. Tudor will remain fully in post through September 30 and will continue in an advisory capacity through at least the end of the year to support Garcia, the Board and the leadership transition. Garcia brings twenty years of experience across arts and cultural policy, government, community engagement and higher education, including work with the New York City Mayor’s Office, Los Angeles County, the City of Santa Monica and, most recently, the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, a small city surrounded by rural communities in the Blue Ridge foothills. Her work has ranged from public engagement and cultural policy to arts administration, public art and a multi-million countywide arts and wellness initiative delivered through more than 100 community-based organizations. Her appointment comes as Culture Forward, Nevada County’s six-year Arts & Culture Action Plan, moves from planning into implementation. The plan connects arts and culture with wider priorities including economic development, workforce development, sustainable tourism and regional identity, education, and community well-being. * * * Be the first to know, sign up for our newsletter, absolutely free of course. Sign Up Robin Garcia “I am honored to join Nevada County Arts & Culture at a moment when so much careful listening, planning and relationship-building has already taken place,” Garcia said. “My first priority will be to listen—to artists and cultural workers, residents, businesses, public leaders and community partners—and to understand how I can best help carry that work forward.” The search was led by the organization’s Board of Directors and included successive stages with staff, community and municipal stakeholders, County leadership and the full Board. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who put themselves forward for this role,” said Amber Jo Manuel, Vice President of the Board of Directors. “The caliber of applicants was extraordinary. We met remarkable people along the way, and their interest in Nevada County Arts & Culture was itself an affirmation of the strength of this organization and the work ahead.” Born and raised in California, Garcia has spent much of her professional life in the state before moving to Virginia, where she most recently served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in Arts Leadership at the University of Virginia. Her move to Nevada County is also a return to California and to family across Northern California. Tudor said, “I am grateful that such an accomplished field saw possibility in Nevada County Arts & Culture and wanted to be part of what comes next. I have enormous faith in Robin—in her judgment, her intellect, her instinct to listen, and her ability to understand arts and culture as part of the wider civic life of a community.” Nevada County Arts & Culture is Nevada County’s designated State-Local Partner with the California Arts Council and administers the Grass Valley–Nevada City and Truckee California Cultural Districts. Garcia assumes the role on October 5. ## More Regional News ### SYRCL’s Wild & Scenic Film Festival Marks 25 Years with Commemorative Poster Art by Fest Co-Founder Kathy Dotson and a New Music Partnership with Madcap Records ### The Power and Beauty of Chamber Music ### Nevada County 4-H to Host Kickoff Celebration in Grass Valley Load more posts Something went wrong.
