Do you find AVIF support is ubiquitous enough to use it? Last I looked it wasn't but it was awhile ago. I still run into places that don't really support WebP right either but it's better than it used to be. I use the weird JPEGs with a gain map for HDR right now.

I just spent about an hour learning about converting images to WebP. For my linkblog; I want my link previews to be small files. Target display is 320x180ish images. Here’s where I landed to …

Oh they are lovely and omnipresent in parts of Europe. Totally private initiative too, an art project more than a government memorial.

I like that you name your tokens of authenticity... a pickup, guns. And then you talk about a song that you probably only know about because you heard the same NPR piece I did about it.

I went to the Ripcord in Houston recently on a Saturday. It used to be the big scary leather bar in the 80s and 90s. It's still a leather bar and still has very butch leathermen. But that night was also gamer night so a bunch of young genderqueer folks showed up to nerd out together.

this is lovely, thank you. btw, saw it on metafilter via paul ford. I love your blog posts comment about "the web that existed back when Rhizome was founded". Metafilter is still that, a little, but greatly diminished.

It's a little more nuanced than cowardice, it's a matter of local laws. For something this stupid it doesn't matter but labels and lines for disputed territory near China or Israel is highly contentious. Not to mention how you depict Crimea. I don't envy the mapmakers here.

I wasn't sure what you were talking about so I looked it up and was disgusted. It's a month old and I missed it. I'm not in DHH's immediate community but certainly adjacent! The Hacker News bros didn't want to touch it.

I think this counts as "official ASL", or at least the language how it is used. ASL is full of creative "nicknames" in sign that are used everywhere. Many are quite hilarious. The gay ones are often obscene.

I liked this readable AP article about it. Don't think much of the quote from John Cox though. Yes, there was a NOTAM and the pilot has ultimate responsibility. But maybe our government shouldn't be disrupting navigation in civilian airspace? apnews.com/article/new-...

The way these costs are sometimes paid by the employer hides them from the public. It's part of why we continue to tolerate this system, it's invisible to a lot of voters.
