Damn. Tony Rayns was a real one. Opened the door to East Asian cinema for so many anglophiles (including me with his accessible language; unrivalled in his knowledge, fluency and passion. I remember doing an intro to a Hou Hsiao Hsien film trying to instil his spirit! His work will live on!

Being more judicious with my film viewing this year. New titles aren’t hitting for me. The hyped BACKROOMS is the natural melding of contemporary film and 4Chan flash video obtuseness. Chiwetel Ejiofor in a giant squishy pirate mascot outfit is not evocative of liminal spaces. It says Redman.

Cute little promo items from this weekend’s preview screenings of PROJECT HAIL MARY. A film I thoroughly enjoyed for its dry kindness and humble blockbuster reach. Doesn’t shove its ecological aspects down your throat, swerves any glib romantic arc, and yet I found its theme of co-operation warming.

Insanely high frame-rate live rotoscoping for an ad …. where else? Japan. Made for the defunct fashion brand Renown in 1988. Love this. (A-ha’s Take On Me was 1985, used the same technique, but a much lower-frame rate as rotoscoping is highly labour intensive)

Hideki Sato - not a name you’d instantly recognise, but definitely gave hours of joy to anyone who picked up a Mega Drive (Genesis) gamepad, Master System, Game Gear or Saturn. Worked on the complete design and ergonomics of all Sega consoles up to the Dreamcast. Sadly, passed away Friday.

Jimmy Cliff only had three film appearances. This is the one to see - write the theme tune, sang the theme tune, took the lead role. Absolutely batshit fun from Perry Henzell’s Kafka-esque spiral. (The other was the forgotten Harold Ramis film CLUB PARADISE with Robin Williams and Peter O’Toole!)

Sad to hear about Udo Kier’s passing. Was only watching him in THE SECRET AGENT this weekend. Always a great stoic presence in any film - a classically trained actor who wasn’t afraid to do genre film & had a knack to ground the surreal and bizarre. I forget he was in many music vids, too.
