Will this week never end?! It feels forever ago to be celebrating at Headingley. I've taken no pleasure from the build up so far & think the anguish will only get worse I blame Gary Slater in part: I can't get the title of his book of Wire's inter-war near misses out of my head: "So Close to Glory"

Delusion reason #5: pleasantly surprisingly to see the relative experience of the Wire team > Wakey in GFs. 5 winners, and only 2 to have played & not won (and only 1 of those with Wire). The players won't have the baggage the fans do! Wakey in contrast: 0 winners, 2 losers (McMeeken's lost 3!)

Delusion reason number 4: Wire have never lost a final to Wakey* (*they've also never won one either)

I've just caught the second semi. OMFG. Delighted as I was, I now feel slighty sick. I was comfortable playing Wigan knowing how it would conclude. Now we're in a 50:50 game. #itsthehopethatkillsyou

GF tickets booked. First time progeny in tow (just one of them; the other has more interesting things to do!), first time we're not in our doomed Stretford End. Delusional reasons #2 & 3 added to the list. Why do we do this to ourselves?! #itsthehopethatkillsyou

I can't believe I've only just realised Ben Currie has never played in a Grand Final! Reason #1 to be delusional about next Saturday already in the bag.

I think I'm officially an old man: thought I'd better watch the poster game of our new overlords to see what all the fuss is about. But NZ Warriors V. Newcastle I just found as unwatchable as most SL games. Apparently a 'great game' but all I saw was constant stoppages & more references to...

Oh god, I can see it panning out again: beat Rovers at home, beat Leeds away, then another GF loss to Wigan. It’s inevitable isn’t it?! Or maybe we’ll just get hammered next week 😂

A great weekend for RL games: looks like I've wrapped up my Fantasy league, and I hit peak prediction accuracy... Wigan by 46 (spot on) Wire by 6 (was by 2) Wakey by 18 (was 16) TOXIII by 10 (spot on) Yellow cap in the RKC Superbru goes a long step towards securing the podium.

So, after months of 'negotiations', the NRL offer is... £425k per club per season for a 50% stake in SL 😂 Funded by a TV deal in Aus that SL could probably get most of themselves if the NRL didn't interfere. I expected a lowball offer, but that's ridiculous. Time to move on.

Of all the things to adopt from soccer’s international game, use of the term ‘friendly’ for international matches falling outside specific tournaments is one everyone should rail against!!

Wigan come out on top in the battle of the fascist voters. Not good news for Wire, who now face what looks like an insurmountable double hurdle of beating the quad holders AND overcoming their final pie-eating nemesis to win the cup. #alwaysouryear

Sub-2... Just mind-blowingly, staggeringly, utterly incredible. I don't think the enormity of this means that much to most folk, but Sabastian Sawe's performance today must surely be the peak of human sporting performance (so far!)

They make it hard to love this game sometimes. I've been a big advocate of the Championship clubs getting a home tie against SL clubs. But what's the point when they just switch venues? Was looking forward to a day out in Sheffield and a new ground. Will find something better to do now instead.

Putting aside its American saviour narrative and factually inaccuracies, Band of Brothers is still an incredible watch, even third or fourth time around. ‘Why we Fight’ especially is a masterpiece, and Ron Livingstone’s performance exceptional. Feels more poignant relevant now than ever before 😢

1st of December delivers reminders of past Christmas memes on other social media platforms. "I never truly feel the Christmas spirit until I see the 'Tony Blair being held back from attacking you in the pub' card."
The front of a Christmas card from Tony and Cherie Blair, showing the couple and the logo "Season's Greetings". Tony is half-angled towards the camera and Cherie has her hand on his chest. They are both slightly miling, but Tonys smile could be viewed as a threatening stare.

Wonder how much RLC has paid to 'partner' with eCal to allow fans to sync fixtures to their calendars for next year. Bearing in mind that this service is already available from @rlrecordkeepers.bsky.social and was available to them for free if they'd only bothered to respond to me 🤔

This. I don’t think the genie will ever go back in the bottle now, but as my reserves GF experience proved, the game is soooo much better without unnecessary off-field interventions. It’s also contributed to a major increase in ‘simulation’ and appeals as players stand there like Christ the Redeemer

Feeling underwhelmed about RLWC26. A combination of remoteness of it, manufactured format giving primacy to money over competitive integrity & lack of hope for England. A WC is supposed to generate global interest; this one is a function of where the sport globally really is & won’t do that IMO

Why do clubs persist in peddling lies over their formation date? All a part of the post-truth landscape I suppose: Wigan 1872, St Helens 1873… I do wonder if Saints didn’t have theirs wrong, whether Wigan would feel the need to stick with their falsehood too?

Neil Ormston @neilormston.bsky.social · 22/11/2025
Actually, it’s just a great programme. Most clubs can’t be arsed with the hassle of producing one these days. But even if they did there’s no chance Stan Doffish’s article would sneak past the editor/ work experience kid compiling it, for fear of damaging ‘the brand’. And the game is poorer for that

Good lord. Of all the things that could be picked over, the choice of London venue must be sooo far down the list. Headingley (20k) was great, but Wembley (60k) wasn’t. Is there a better proxy for the parochialism of the game than this?!

A sensible post below. There was an image this morning that brought home the fact that NH and SH RL are operating in different worlds… It was CommBank stadium, with the backdrop of Sydney’s skyscrapers. For me it epitomised the vastly different macro factors the RFL have to contend with V the NRL…

Ending the season as we started. Full of smiles and mis-placed optimism 😂 Not sure we’ll get on the pitch like we did at Haven, but similarly blessed with unseasonable weather, and a shorter drive home at least. C’mon England!
