It was - as always - a huge honour to be allowed to contribute some modest thoughts to the IfZ’s colloquium on Martin Broszat and his impact/legacy. Interesting to reflect on the particular traditions of British NS-Forschung and the conditions under which they have - or haven’t - survived.

Fascinating to re-read some of Martin Broszat’s key texts in preparation for a symposium at the IfZ to mark the 100th year of his birth. Some of it understandably dated, some open to critique, some of it remarkably fresh - but, above all, he was asking all the right questions.

That a government boxed in by its own timidity proved unable to address the deep economic challenges bequeathed by the GFC, Brexit, the pandemic, the wars was predictable enough - the unforgivable bit for me, however, is the endless pandering to the profoundly fascistic tendencies in our society.
