I puritani review — Lisette Oropesa dazzles in Covent Garden’s Bellini
The soprano is thrilling as Elvira in this rare production of Bellini’s knotty drama, set during the English Civil War

"I had this feeling he was there, that I had been with him." What a treat to sit down with the woman who tends the Mahlerian flame - Marina Mahler, the composer's granddaughter. Aside: she grew up next door to Bruno Walter, who gave her jam tarts and let her swim in his pool. linkly.link/2lUBp

My ghostly encounter with my grandfather Gustav Mahler
In a rare interview, the great composer’s granddaughter talks about why we need his music more than ever — and her campaign for a Mahler memorial in Vienna

“The non-reaction of general society was deafening, it was infuriating. I had the experience of losing roughly 90 per cent of my social circle, most of whom simply disappeared. Some marched in the streets, I would say against me, on October 8. These were people I knew.” t.co/SRbEZ0E1vP

I know why Regents Opera performs in the original language - because that's how you tempt young singers who want to get a role under the belt - but a spiky English translation would have given this already striking Salome an extra boost. linkly.link/2gNHF

"Is it a step too far to feel a kinship in the impulse that draws us to Mahler’s symphonies and also to the barrage of ‘content’ being fed into our lives via our smartphones? The difference is that Mahler finds meaning in the madness." Lovely stuff from @rebeccafranks.bsky.social : linkly.link/2eoFG

Did we really need a gender-swapped Passion of the Christ?

Is there a word for the opposite of 'decimate', ie to remove 90% of something? That's what Beryl Bainbridge did with her novels. In this 1977 interview with Mavis Nicholson, she observes that all her books are the same length - "158 pages" - and "to get that I write anything up to 1,500 pages".

Really saddened and shocked to hear of Andrew Clements' death. A wonderful critic, matchless on 20 and 21st century music, and a great colleague and friend to whom I owe an immense debt of gratitude for his role in giving me my own break as a critic. It's a huge loss. And he will be greatly missed.
