On my way back to Newcastle after a fantastic 5 days at the #EMBOBacNet workshop in gorgeous Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain. I feel so fortunate to have attended and presented my work! I go back to my project feeling inspired 👩🏽‍🔬🔬 @henrikstrahl.bsky.social @cbcb-newcastle.bsky.social

A new preprint out doi.org/10.64898/202... exploring the bioenergetics and metabolism of the bacterial pathogen Enterococcus faecalis with some very interesting results! Fantastic work from @olivia-paxie.bsky.social during her PhD!

Our B. subtilis autolysis paper by former group members Kenneth Seistrup and @alansckoh.bsky.social is finally out. This one has been lingering in my drawer for far too long. (1/3). #microsky www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

I attended the Physiological Society: Fit for Future conference at Newcastle University today. I gave a talk (first presenter of the conference!) about some of the work I did with Vanessa Armstrong during my undergrad. It was amazing to hear about the work being done to support students in HE!

E. coli is the leading bacterium causing death from AMR infections worldwide. If you'd like to explore approaches to exploit the DNA damage response as alternative antimicrobial, please apply to the following PhD studentship available in my lab starting October 2026: www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Fabian was quicker :) But yes, we have an open postdoc position in bacterial bioenergetics and membrane biology, using on B. subtilis as the model. Come join us! @cbcb-newcastle.bsky.social is a great place to work, and we are a friendly, international lab. Visa+IHS fees covered. #microsky

I had a great time at the @bsacandjac.bsky.social ARM workshop! I met some wonderful scientists and had great discussions about my work! Also, I walked away with a poster prize!! Thanks for organising @friendlymicrobe.bsky.social @conmeehan.bsky.social

Presenting a collection of projects spanning my time at the University of Otago and Newcastle University was a squeeze, but I think I managed! @avertproject.bsky.social @bsacandjac.bsky.social

A new methods paper from us, this time with a focus on reliable monitoring membrane potential and cell lysis at different growth stages and cell densities. Also, note the surprisingly high level of background lysis in seemingly healthy B. subtilis cultures. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

My first (very tiny) contribution to the academic world!! I had a great time during my Harry Smith Vacation Studentship working with @wragbags.bsky.social, and I am so glad to see the compilation of everyone's hard work finally out! 🥳

So happy our pre-print on daptomycin mechanism of action is now out! Here, we present three main findings: i) daptomycin does not form large membrane pores in either B. subtilis or S. aureus, (1/3)
