A mention of Carola Ernst's Silhouettes crépusculaires (1921) so intrigued me that I located a copy and read it, despite my poor French. A moving, elegiac account of taking a blinded French officer from German-occupied Belgium to his home in France early in World War One. neglectedbooks.com?p=9256

Thirteen Women (1933). Your Mileage May Vary.
From the Motion Picture Herald, March 25, 1933.

THIRTEEN WOMEN: Irene Dunne— Was very good mystery. Much better than the average, although they did kill all the women in Hollywood. Myrna Loy exceptionally good in part. Doubt if anyone could have played the part as good. — Robert K. Yancey, Paradise Theatre, Cotter, Ark. Railroad and general patronage.

THIRTEEN WOMEN: Irene Dunne— If this is entertainment, then I don't know what the word means. Never should have been made. Played Mar. 1-2.

Random cover from the TBR pile: Babyhip by Patricia Welles (1967) An "edgy" novel about Sarah Green, 16 going on 21, listens to Ornette Coleman, buys a Boss Pornographers LP to wig out to at an LSD party. Ya never know how well such things age: what's the half-life of cringe?

Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer Marquis James called Mary Lee's It's a Great War! (1929) "the best story of any war excepting The Red Badge of Courage. It nearly won the Pulitzer for Fiction itself. Yet it's utterly forgotten today. A classic begging for rediscovery. neglectedbooks.com/?...

Subject for further research: Helene Eliat. Eliat was a German writer & psychotherapist who published three novels about the relationships between men and women, all long out of print. If she is remembered now, it is for donating a portrait of Freud by Dali to the Freud Museum.

The life that comes to Seathorpe in Neil Bell's Life Comes to Seathorpe (1946) leaves watery puddles and huge worm-like tracks. Given Bell's predilection for detours, however, this less a horror novel than a meander through the odd corners of the author's psyche. neglectedbooks.com/?...

Kenneth S. Davis attempted to do for FDR what Robert Caro is (still) attempting to do for LBJ. Unlike Caro, though, he had two handicaps: a sometimes Victorian prose style; and a predilection for fiction. And yet, at times he could be just as magnificent a storyteller. neglectedbooks.com/?...

"Let's admit it: we are among the beasts." Jean-Paul Aron's The Art of Eating in France (1975) is a savage history of food in Paris in the 1800s. By killing off the nobility, the French Revolution sparked the rise of the restaurant--but that wasn't the end of the violence. neglectedbooks.com/?...

You know a great thing about Montana? With nothing more than a MT driver's license, you can check out books from any state university library. Just walk in, select the ones you want, stop by Circulation, and walk out with them. Amazing. Do other states do this?

Imagine Don Draper out of a job. For months. A year. Allen R. Dodd's memoir, The Job Hunter, recounts the humbling experience of a once-hailed ad man having—unsuccessfully—to find work. A white-collar classic that belongs on the shelf next to Heller's Something Happened. neglectedbooks.com/?...

The Watson Sisters performed for over 50 years, retiring in the early 1950s to the same house in Buffalo where they grew up. Kitty, who married several times, died in 1967; Fanny (at the piano here in a picture from 1959) never married and died in 1970. What a fun rabbit hole! 6/6

Born in Buffalo, they hit the burlesque circuit around the turn of the century when they were still teens. By the early 1910s, they were headliners, and in 1915 they switched from burlesque to vaudeville (look 'em up: the distinction is lost on us today). 2/6
