it has come to the attentions of Aestre and Deirdre that Alisha has learned the true names of the four elemental Fae; Tat, the Salmon of Knowledge, Kek, the Tree of Life, Pip, the bird of song, and Bob, the Salamander of Fire. such a thing does not come without consequences, as Deirdre explained in a previous story. Aestre expands on this by saying, "to know the four is to become a force of Nature. you are already a powerful witch, and only time will show the true depth of it"

"What will happen to me?" Alisha asks.

"that's for you ti figure out." Aestre attempts to assure her she is in immediate danger, "you have a new life, an already kind heart, and with a bit of self-preservation, you'll live a long long time"

"what should i do?" Alisha asks in return.

"Bob? Really?" even Alisha is surprised at how simple the names seem to be.

"i was a small child when i named them" Aestre says defensively.

Alisha waves her hands and smiles disarmingly, "oh! not judging!" she replies, "Bob's a perfect name for him!"

alt-textra: it took me longer than i want to admit to work out what their names all ought to be. i remember just looking at the silly salamander i had drawn and realized quickly he could only be a "Bob". and then it was like, well, all their names ought to be three letter palindromes like how a little kid might name them, and Kek and Pip just sorta fell into place.

it might be hard to imagine Aestre as a little girl frolicking like an idiot through the newly formed world of Druidia just coming up with names for things, but honestly if you're going to do world building you may as well approach it like a little kid and build it up from their.

i'm still not completely sure what Alisha's secret name will be, but i got the whole sequel to work it out.

"What does this mean?" Grace asks.

"What do you see?" Deirdre asks.

"Patches of dark stuff" Grace answers.

"what that is" explains Alisha "is a part of a soul."

"WHAT??" Grace yells dumbfounded. Deirdre as well is shocked, but maybe by something a little different than what Grace is shocked by.

"i have been so blind as to have nearly missed a lesson in kindness from a seventeen year old brat" Deirdre takes Grace's hand "thank you for bringing all of us home, safely, young Gráinne"

Grace begins crying again.

alt-textra: Deirdre's language in the last line has two things i want to bring up. first, she sees Grace's feelings but still does not seem to recognize Randy on the same level Grace does. i don't like to write perfect characters cuz i find them boring, so this may be a flaw that Deirdre takes with her the rest of her life. Grace sees this as a chance to fully embrace her change, hence the tears.

the second is the name Gráinne which is the historic Grace O'Malley's Irish name. it means Grain, but combined with Moal as in Gráinne Mhoal means Baldy as the historic Grace had shaved her head to sneak aboard her father's ship when she was twelve years old. the name is also a variation on Gránna. 😉 cheers, friends!

alt-textra: if you haven't had the chance to listen to Vashti Bunyan, her music is quite wonderful. it's often seen as quintessential cottagecore. i find her music full of sadness but evocative of Nature and love. her first album Just Another Diamond Day only had a run of 600 pressings but is a full of charm, silliness, and sweetness. you can find CDs reprints and streaming of this album more easily, now. her later recordings are much more melancholy but no less beautiful.

i don't know what she would think of my art, but i dearly love hers.

alt-textra: so i've used a lot of garbage related puns in this one, and Grace may or may not have done this on purpose. i did it on purpose, anyway.

anyway, yeah. you shouldn't have to kill yourself to help someone else. Randy was most certainly powerful enough to have dealt with the Bean Sidhe. and this is entirely Deirdre at fault here as shall be explained over the next couple pages.

i always think of how different Charlotte's Web and The Giving Tree are. Charlotte helps Wilbur out of love even though she knows she's dying anyway. she's securing a future she'll never see. The Giving Tree self-sacrifices for a selfish boy who never learns reciprocal kindness. the boy even builds a boat out of the tree to get away from everybody! JFC! the tree is reduced to a stump and the boy a miserable old man, meanwhile Wilbur lives a happy long life thanks to the unexpected kindness of a spider and he goes on to teach generations of Charlotte's children all about the great matriarch.

anyhoo, long alt-textra this time. and there are still 8 pages left in the chapter! a lot can happen in that time, y'know?

Alt-textra: so, OBVIOUSLY Randy's final line here is lifted from The Bride of Frankenstein which is such a departure from the original novel Frankenstein that i would highly suggest never using it on your book report. however, Bride of Frankenstein is a fantastic movie and does manage to capture the tragedy of the original novel better than most media presentations of Frankenstein. (haven't seen the new one, yet, so no spoilers, please!) the creature becomes deeply sympathetic and i won't deny the influence that movie had on the Garbage Spirit Randy. Boris Karloff who played the creature was problematic to say the least. yikes!

okay, so, the servant sacrifices themself to save the hero trope... i hate it. it's a disgusting trope, so i hope y'all know the next several pages are meant as a resolve to that and i will openly criticize it. i believe Grace is absolutely right to be upset, here. but enough said! there's still ten pages and a whole other chapter to fully resolve everything.

alt-textra: "took us long enough" is first said in Beyond the Bus Stop and is in fact the first real line of this entire cycle of stories. my repetition of lines like this are part of something i've been coming to believe in, more and more, that maybe time is a lot more cyclical than i used to think. i don't know how much so, i don't have the math to know if this is true on a cosmic scale. maybe. some folks seem to think so. i'm content seeing cycles in my every day life, any more. renewal of things, shifting changes, life, death, rebirth. i don't know about reincarnation. i'm skeptical. but that's not the same as rebirth.

and indeed, they both vanish before the giant creature of garbage Randy with his outstretched arm keeping the portal open. in his other arm he holds tight the bean sidhe who has been causing all sorts of problems in previous pages.

"see you on the other side" little q.'s voice is heard saying.

inside the void created by the portal, e_ and little q. appear to float in some field of blue. "e_ never gets used to this" e_ says in their old third person pov. they'll still do that from time to time.

"it's not like falling or floating, is it?" little q. says.

"it's not entirely unpleasant" they add looking around.

"especially when you aren't being carried off by a twelve foot tall Garbage Spirit against your will." e_ says very specifically.

"hm." little q. considers.

alt-textra: there is a key difference between portals and kabouter doors. kabouter doors are often links between places within the same world while portals link realities. how Zöe got from Druidia to our world remains a mystery and one which i'll have to explore later. kabouter doors are also solid and considerably safer, if not far more confusing ways to travel, than portals.

not quite sure how to respond to such an idiom, Athrú says, "er... yes?"

alt-textra: so yeah last week. it sucked. between my dog, hosting a thanksgiving dinner, and then promptly getting sick friday, there was no way i was getting anything done. so i cozied up and restarted BoTW till my head stopped feeling like a damn balloon.

i love e_ being a complete goof about their hair, here. Grace will indeed need to help them as much as possible.

Athrú, still concerned starts to turn away, but Harvard puts his hand on his son's ... shoulder? i guess i should have given Athrú shoulders... anyway, he says "-but- we are Púcaí; branches of the Tree of Life. we hold each other up"

Harvard continues, "give yourself a form you find beautiful, we will forge a new crown for you, and i will be here for you for as as i live, my son." he holds Athrú's hand and both smile, believing maybe things will turn out okay, after all.

Athrú, in a new form- wearing a black shirt, ears shorter, eyes brighter with maroon pupils, a small nose very much like that Deirdre or little q., teeth very much like Quinn's, and a curious familiar widow's peak of a hairline with just a peach fuzz amount of hair sprouting. "What do you think, The Fox?" he asks Grace.

"Well, now would ja look-it that!" Grace says.

Alt-Textra: whatever kind of leader Athrú turns out to be, it will likely be nothing like the previous King. at some point i'd very much like to write a one off story of the state of Druidia. i don't really know. as by the lack of details inside of the castle, he'll probably get some furniture at some point. 🙃

it is Zöe leading the oddest prcoession ever to grace the Púcaí castle! "i present Harvard of the Chalices along with his new squires Magpie & Starling!" likely they met the pair outside the castle and she just decided to make them squires for no good reason. they'll do fine.

"as Princet, e_ could come and go as they pleased. but as... Quing, is it? they are bound by very old magic. and a transfer of power can only happen through bonds of kinship, and it MUST be by the will of both parties."

Blot continues, but this panel shifts to another púca, Athrú. "there are only three alive who may claim the throne; yourself, Prince Harvard of the Chalices, or Athrú..."

Quinn, the young kabouter, pokes Athrú in the arm, "Yes Athrú knows" the púca says.

so much so that tears begin welling in their eyes as they realize they are going home, after all.

"Although," Athrú continues, "Athrú will need some help."

alt-textra: Gránna/Athrú was a character i had no idea what i was going to with at first. just an end to a means just as Grace, Kilroy/Zöe, Randy, and even Deirdre all originally were.

this is why i don't call myself a planner or a pantser in writing, but a grower. sometimes the story takes turns i don't expect and characters are allowed to become whatever they will. e_'s father the King might have turned out that way.

this method has its flaws as some parts of my stories can be jarring as hell (believe me i see it, too 🙃) but for me i think it offers a chance for a unique way to tell a story that isn't set in stone or pulled out of a hat. a nice third path.

as in the song Thomas the Rhymer the queen of Fairies, after describing two other roads to heaven and hell, says "do you see yon bonny bonny road that lies amidst the glen? that is the road to fair-off land where you and i must go." that's always my road.

alt-textra: as crazy as it sounds, i vibe most on making the textures. pen and ink textures really make the main line art pop in ways no color scheme can.

once in my deviantART days i was asked in perfect seriousness what program i used to make all the little dots and cross-hatching. it's all hand. and no my hands do not hurt cause i don't grip my pens with the force of a tiger's jaws. i didn't start using digital till only about ten years ago and i STILL prefer traditional approaches.

"i wanted to show you for a while. Grace meant no harm. we love each other, now." e_ tell little q.

"yeah-but not like romantic love... right, e_?" Grace asks nervously realizing this was not in fact established as they were sort of busy when they declared a love for each other.

"Grace," e_ says, "i love you as all friends ought to"

"yeah..." Grace calms down a little, "same. love you as well, little q."

"oh!" little q. is rather surprised.
