Yeah. I get the occasional thing from them (since I can't do dairy, sometimes they're the only option) but rarely worth the markup for "natural" and/or paleo.

We're on a roll. The Primal Kitchen garlic aioli, bought on sale, is gross. Back to Kraft for me.

I am bad at art! But I messed around with my watercolors. I clearly need even more dumbed down tutorials than the one I was using.

Despite having a month to expiry (and not having been opened), the deli meat ham had a really gross gelatinous film all over it. Didn't rinse off. So, out of an abundance of caution, into the trash it went. Was really looking forward to grilled ham and cheese but so it goes.

That was fun. I spent over an hour looking for my new watercolor brushes. I looked in all the logical and some illogical before finally pulling out every single drawer of the piece near the door. Sure enough, they managed to fall off the top into a drawer full of hats.

One terrifying thing about LLMs is that it lets GLAM people turn their bad ideas about our values into actionable software. Our systems are about to have the same internal incoherence as our SharePoint sites. We will be able to implement the dumbest and most byzantine rules we can dream of.

Our creative writing prof, who hadn't been in the Archives herself, brought over a visiting poet. I showed off our poetry and literary collections. Fun was had by all. Ex: Poet had been rejected by the same publisher as local author.

Exploration of friendship and what it means to grow up (and unpack trauma), all while entwined with Mister Magic, a kids' show that is so much more (supernatural edition). Bittersweet ending.

Just finished listening to Mister Magic. A+, do recommend. Read the acknowledgements! Val has no memories from before she was on the ranch, but when three guys show up, saying they were all on a mysterious kids' TV together, she takes a leap and goes with them to a "reunion". #books 📚🌈

Anyone have a flatbread recipe you like? I have a hard time getting a decent flatbread around here and the solution is clear. Not a yeast-dough expert though have dabbled some.

This is a perpetual fave. Bc small town availability, I use shelf-stable gnocchi and scale the recipe accordingly. Definitely forgot the basil this time and didn't notice.

Got a Misfits Market order. Made Japanese Gnocchi with Miso Tomato Butter, a fave, w the baby bok choy. To make it faster, I made the sauce and cooked the gnocchi at the same time (worth washing 1 extra pan). #food newtreeranch.com/journal/reci...

On to Willy, the cellmate who was horrified w Stanley's rat eating. He's a drug dealer just concerned with staying off the cops' radar. Then, the New Madrid fault slips. And slips again. Then fire, then earthquake debris dams the Mississippi. Chapter ends w Willy wandering a destroyed St. Louis.

At 17, Stanley cuts off and eats a guy's ear. "these herbivores got really uncomfortable when they found he was a true carnivore", so he hides the cannibalism. Inspired by a rat he caught in a jail cell, "looking around the alleys and back streets, he now saw there was plenty of fresh meat." Uh oh

needleclicker @needleclicker.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
And we get the roots of the cannibalism. Stanley's dad cooks and eats his wife following her death, then refuses to live in a "burrow" (house). Bludgeoned to death by hailstones. Stanley eats his dad. Stanley eventually sets the homestead on fire and takes off for a city.

There was a pep rally...He heard a shout of "Give me a...." he didn't get the letter, but before they got past, he heard, "What's that spell?" and the crowd roared out a word. The only thing Stanley could spell was his last name, and he thought it would be neat to lead a bunchbof people doing that.

Oooooook. The POV character of our next chapter is....the leader of the cannibals! Joined by his celly, Will. "Stanley sat on his sleeping pad in the dark, thinking about things. Thinking did not come easily for him. Added to that was the fact that most of his memories were bad."

Our latest chapter, Planning to Survive, sees Lyle getting Josh and Mark riding. Author has Opinions on proper horse training (big fan of gentle training, surprisingly). They get the radio to town working and everyone settled on respective homesteads.

After the battle, the guys were semi-informally discharged - no computers functioning, so handwritten note from commander discharging them. Kept walking home to NE. And thus ends chapter 4.

Crying with laughter. The brigade pushes into Juarez, urban warfare. Sure, fine. "As we went through rooms this time, things started looking a great deal like Afghanistan. Even the literature was in Arabic...these were indeed Al-Qaeda forces we were routing."

We get the backstory of Josh and Mark, our Army boys. They were in Afghanistan when things fell apart. Made it back to DC, only to be told they couldn't be there bc all the troops abroad died. Formed a KIA brigade to go fight separatist cartels on the MX border. Fuel crisis, so walked the whole way.

Lyle's big idea for defeating the cannibals: train the horses to be warhorses. Everyone else rightfully thinks this is dumb.

needleclicker @needleclicker.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Oooof. Starting out chapter 4 - The Army; War Stories - with a little light racism. "The last (foster) family he was with was massively into outdoors and Indian lore. It was there he found a talent for tracking and hunting."

needleclicker @needleclicker.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And we're finishing the chapter back with Lyle. He makes it home and we get a technicolor description of his saddle sores (what? Riding a half-broke horse, using your wife's saddle, isn't a great idea?). When he goes to check, he finds his next door neighbors gone but one of their dogs still there.

I suspect the author served in the military. Fairly amusing mocking of it. Colonel: "I said I would take it under advisement." Matt: "right. In case we're killed or captured the agency will disavow any knowledge. What kind of seasonings do you need when you add advisement to a cannibal stew?"
100
needleclicker @needleclicker.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
On finding 250: "The inevitable conclusion was that if the colonel could not or would not take action, then it would become a local affair. It wouldn't be much of a fight, actually, not with two seasoned veterans (the deserters) showing a number of local irritated dead-eye marksmen how to do it."

Our chap 3 narrator is Sheriff Matt. In a major plot twist, we find out part of the sheriff's deal with the army is tolerating the cannibal camp, provided it's leader, Stanley Peepul, keeps to under 50 followers.

Our second chapter, The Army of North Harland, concludes with Josh and Mark, our Army deserters, scouting the cannibal camp. They find almost 300 "peepul" (the cannibal leader wasn't great at spelling).

We're back with more Dust & Cannibals. Lyle has hooked up with two local boys who are Army deserters.
What are our rules of engagement? Rules of engagement? Lyle chuckled. If you have to have such things, here ypu go. Rule one: if you get your asses killed, it could negatively impact your employment. Rule Two: if that bunch gets ahold of your weapons or gear, I could get teally pissed, particularly if it's being used to shoot at me or mjne. Rule three: don't waste ammo.

We conclude the first chapter with our hero, Lyle, having made it into Alma and alerted the sherriff to cannibals. The sheriff informs Lyle that, to fight the obesity epidemic, you can only get food prescribed by your personal physician, which led to unrest and martial law. Lyle is deputized.

Sharing is caring, so y'all get to suffer along with me as I dig into Dust & Cannibals, a local self published book that promises to be terrible. Hopefully so bad it's funny. #books
Dust & Cannibals by Bruce I. SchindlerIt was a planet much like this, in a time much like now. There were several rounds of limited nuclear warfare. Solar flares knocked out large sections of the power grid....Lyle and his wife were surviving on a small ranch in Nebraska. Largely self-sufficient, they still needed some supplies. Getting those supplies, when there was no longer any has, was a challenge. Lyle had to ride a half-trained stallion fifteen miles to town to see what he could get. On the way, he discovered cannibals had moved into the area between his ranch and town, which really messed with his quiet rural lifestyle. Soon, however, he found cannibals were the least of his problems.
