10/ The spiciest part 🌶️ Dan on Redux: He hasn't needed a state manager in five years. Dan on Vite: the no-bundle-in-dev bet was a bad foundation and the team took four years to fix it Dan on React Compiler: it is fine-grained reactivity, people just don't get the mechanism.

9/ Some apps already built on ATProto: Tangled, a code forge where pull requests live in your own repo Leaflet, long-form blogging Pocket and Offprint, two more publishing platforms that share Leaflet's format Eurosky, hosting for your data outside the US And so much more

8/ This got me excited as an engineer. Dan showed me PDSls, a tool that lists everything in your repo, and then casually mentioned he edits the JSON there and it shows up in his app. That's a weird and wonderful way to build software.

7/ I was sure hosting your own social data would cost a lot of money. Thats not the case. Nobody hits your server when they read your posts, the app already cached them. Your server just sits there holding some JSON.

6/ Your username is just a nickname. Underneath it there's an account ID that never changes. So if you lose your domain, you get a new one and point the account at it. Sounds kinda insecure to me. Can i hijack @danabra.mov s acount? Apparently not. More on this in the full talk

5/ I asked the question everyone asks: what happens when LeBron posts? One update to his JSON file that keeps his schema. That's it. Every hard problem sits in the app layer, and not in the protocol So every wrapper of ATProto builds their own infrastructure to handle the Lebron James Problem

4/ This one took me a minute to accept. 10 years of X gave me "my audience". But the follower count was never mine, it was a number X computed from other people's data. On ATProto your repo only has what you did. Post, like, follow.

Neciu Dan @neciudan.dev · 11/09/2026
3/ Mastodon decentralized the wrong part! It copied the whole app across thousands of servers and made every admin a landlord. Your account lives in each admin domain. They moderate you, they can delete you, and if two admins fall off you can stop seeing your friends.
110
Neciu Dan @neciudan.dev · 11/09/2026
2/ Remember Google Reader? You wrote on your blog, it showed up in everyone's reader. Then Google killed it and we all moved into Facebook and Twitter, where the content only exists inside the app. ATProto is Reader coming back, but for every app at once.

1/ Here is an example: Netscape HTTP outlived the browser that made it famous. That's what might happen with ATProto. If Bluesky the app dies, the protocol doesn't. Which is the exact opposite of what happens if X dies or Mastadon

My biggest takeaways from @danabra.mov, Redux co-creator, ex Meta and ex Bluesky engineer. We spent an hour on what AT Protocol actually is, why it scales, what it costs to own your data, and everything in between 10 takeaways in this thread 🧵 Watch it all here: youtu.be/gtrGsimXAVA

My pick from Chrome's I/O 2026 web UI is moveBefore(). It reparents a DOM node while a video inside keeps playing. CSS custom functions via @function come close, since they replace a chunk of what preprocessors still do. developer.chrome.com/blog/new-in-we…
