Driving home with youngest daughter (19), after enjoying a nice dinner together, the radio was all ads. I say “We need to get a Walkman for the car.” Her reply “What’s that???” I clearly have more work to do.

I’m ready for the end of summer. It’s been long, hot and way too busy. Let’s say goodbye to the heat with a fresh #trichrome 🔴🟢🔵 Made this one with an OM2n, 135 lens and Ilford PanF. #believeinfilm
A very colorful photograph of lawn chairs made with black and white film.

It seems this morning’s environmental portrait session is being rescheduled. Annoying.

There’s a new trend of photographing TV screens and claiming the resulting images are their own. I suggest these people don’t stop there. Copy/paste the artist statement of Richard Prince and also claim that as their own. Then do us all a favor and pawn your gear.

The pricing on these is insane. I always wanted to buy a second body. But now I’m looking my copy more as an investment piece. Which is a shame, it needs to be out in the field more than it is. I paid $1500 - new.

I was working up some BW portraits today for a client. Shot them on a 553 with a 120 and black pro mist filter on Tmax100. I need to invest in some heavier diffusion filters. Thinking about a set of Softars. #toomuchdetail

Artificially brassing your unused gear is lame af. (note the pristine lens mount) Why is this predominantly a red dot thing? Photo is from an email I received today from a well known retailer, not AI. No shade on them.

Been listening to a lot of music making podcasts lately. Discussions on gear, creative blocks, workflow, GAS, digital vs analog, concerns about AI. One medium is auditory, the other visual, both more similar than not!

Haven’t had the ELX out for a few months. Was the right tool for the job today. For a quick paced portrait session, it beats hand cranking a 500cm.

11:45pm and I’m re-preparing for a 10am photo session. Creative work isn’t 9-5. When ideas hit, gotta move.

This is creepy AF! I received this marketing email this morning from a large photo retailer. I can only imagine the sleeze balls who think this is a good idea. This kind of thing does everyone in the industry a disservice. We need to be better than this.

@tomnorthfilm.bsky.social after our discussion about the merits of weather sealing a couple days ago, guess this was bound to happen. Camera/lens did great used them both all day. The strobe remote did get a little water in the LCD (not weather sealed). A 600w/s monolight also got a good soaking.
A photo of a very wet camera, lens and strobe remote. Unexpected rain is no excuse to cancel a long planned photo session. People’s time and the effort to get them together is often far more valuable than the equipment.

Sitting in a restaurant with youngest, a World Cup match is on. The over dramatization of any trip, fall or contact is insane. It’s like watching WWE. Perfection of the “it’s so painful my career is over” look is clearly a huge part of any pre-game preparations.

A simple #trichrome observation. #believeinfilm
A trichrome photo of shadows moving across a yard as seen through a window. The photo was made with an OM2n, 28mm lens, Ilford Delta 100 film and of course 🔴🟢🔵 filters. Film was developed with D76/ID-11 with no dilution. Exposures were approximately 15 minutes apart.

#Wideluxx selling fast. My cutoff for an untested camera was $3500. You’ll need $4572 (with shipping). Which isn’t that bad considering what it is. But at that price, I’d like to hear from owners and see some reviews. I can patiently wait for the next production run.

Today was unseasonably hot; 100°f. The sun did set, it cooled, traveled across the neighborhood on my electric skateboard to a special person’s house, had some wine. Rode home (without crashing) was awesome.

Had some students in my office this afternoon. One of them picked up my copy of Robert Frank's "The Americans". He wanted some history. I told him everything I knew. Immigration is a good thing for our democracy as well as diversity in all its forms.

My camera set up for (hopefully) my final photo shoot of 2025. Today’s last file number; A0659199.3FR. The CFV back records file numbers sequentially. Over the years, it has churned out a staggering amount of data, 16 megapixels at a time on its square CCD sensor.

Out enjoying a nice dinner with my youngest.. US Open was on a few of the TV’s. No joy in that sport. The athletes weren’t happy. The fans were mostly expressionless. WTF.. go do something else people. Life is far too short to anguish in your leisure time.

New ride from Canada! Glad I got it now. In a few days it might cost 35% more. It’s going to be tough on these small businesses. #longboard

This has been the summer of the half frame camera. There are new photos posted literally every time I open this app. I can’t help but think the Pentax 17 gets most of the credit.

Darkroom talk tonight got me thinking. I’ve had a couple different ideas for building a home darkroom to have post “retirement.” But now I’m rethinking things. Maybe the way to go is super simple. Wildcat Hill style. Forget all the dedicated stuff. Light bulb, printing frame and a sink.

A complete brain fart of lens design. Sony’s fancy G Master 70-200 has a lens mount alignment marker that is the same color as the lens. Impossible to see in the field. I’ve resorted to a low tech fix. Otherwise, it has proven to be a really nice lens.
An arrow sticker is needed to help quickly locate the proper lens mounting location on a Sony lens.

editing is selecting images to show from a bigger take of “unedited” images. editing is not post production or manipulation of images. to say this image is unedited isn’t correct. that would imply a random image was selected from a take of photos and we all know that isn’t likely. #mondayrant

Here's my contribution to #FolderWeek Used my 4x5 Speed Graphic. Hand held, rangefinder focused and composed with the viewfinder. Such a quick and easy way to work. Used #FP4Party #believeinfilm
A black and white photo of overgrown yucca plants. The tallest is 25+ feet tall. They dwarf a parking lot light fixture they are starting to engulf. The photo was made hand holding a vintage Speed Graphic camera. This is one of two frames exposed. In the first, the lighting was very overcast and drab. The sun broke for a few moments. I made a quick aperture adjustment, slight composition adjustment and made this frame. The exposure was 1/50 second at f11.5 using a 135mm Graflex Optar lens. The Ilford FP4 film was processed with a generic D76 equivalent diluted 1:1 at 20C.
