Yesterday I paid a visit to the disused railway tunnels near Helensburgh, deviated in the mid-1910s when the South Coast line from Sydney to Wollongong and Nowra was duplicated

A tunnel portal with the other end visible around the short tunnel’s gentle curve, with some foliage in the foreground growing on the old trackbed approaching the tunnel

The remnants of Helensburgh station platform, including station sign (yes it is authentic, not a modern replica!), with old disused tracks leading into the mouth of a longer, darker tunnel

Track leading into the tunnel, with shallow pools of water over the sleepers between the rails

Inside the tunnel. The track stops just inside it. A pipe and lumpy soil extend away into the blackness of the brick-lined hole through the earth

AI and ABs for the win!

AI confuses a match played today with one played in 2006 or so.

#trains I remember these locomotives from when I was at intermediate school - back in a kinder, mor gentle time historians like to call the early 1980s. Today, they're in excursion service - and very dangerous.
