My pick: the Velotric Discover 3 at $1,999. The Aventons are too heavy for me to handle, and I don't trust the Discover M's throttle clutch yet.

Stock lights on all of them are weak. Fine for daytime, but if you ride at dusk, dawn, or in covered areas, spend the money on better ones. Some rear lights now have radar and change how they flash to warn cars coming up behind you.

Both brands are solid, with good dealer support, and both seem financially stable, at least as stable as e-bike makers get. On security, Aventon has the edge: its GPS tracking is about $20/yr, far cheaper than third-party GPS trackers. Velotric only has passive Apple/Google Find My tracking.

The Discover M is a mid-drive with a throttle. When you use the throttle, a clutch disengages the pedals. It's very new, so there hasn't been time to learn how it fails or how long it lasts. I'm not ready to trust it yet.

The Velotrics are about 60 lbs. I could lift them, and both rode very nicely. I can actually see myself lifting one onto a car hitch rack or a bus bike rack for transit. Those 20 lbs make a real difference.

The Aventons ride well, but they weigh around 80 lbs. I couldn't lift the Abound at all, and I struggled just to get it positioned on a bike rack.

Shopping for an e-bike as a rider over 300 lbs. I test rode four: Aventon Abound SR and Aventure 3, and Velotric Discover 3 and Discover M. All rated for heavier riders, all with a throttle. Bad knees mean I need that throttle. 🧵
