Earlier this evening, I was chatting with Nat Barmore, my co-designer on Dread, and he dug up a 27 year old file containing the original dice mechanics for the game. These were to be used alongside the Jenga tower and we never played with them. We just never needed them.

Now, I get to cheat in WWWRPG by framing misses as botches. A useful nuance is that a botch is when you intend one thing, but it gets fucked up, so something else that you didn't intend but is still related to the intention happens instead. Bad for the character, good for storytelling!

My favorite technique for avoiding “misses are bad” in classic pbta Moves is giving specific, interesting things or choices that happen on a miss. It may be bad for the character or situation, but it should be interesting for the players to engage with!
