Two modes of aging to explain why lifespans differ across species - Nature Aging
We developed a mathematical framework that maps survival data onto cellular damage dynamics, which revealed two distinct aging regimes across species. This unified model explains why and how aging pat...

Giant thanks to everyone who made this possible: Yifan Yang & Glen Pridham; Tomer Levy for triggering the idea; @Bens Shenhar, Shachaf Frenkel & Tsvi Tlusty for discussions/math; Avi Mayo for helping with everything; and my PI/mentor @urialonlab.bsky.social. None of this happens without you! 🎉

Our model-based analysis shows damage production rate is the best proxy for lifespan (more than removal or robustness). Importantly, different organisms age in different ways—and our classic model organisms age completely differently than humans do. Huge implications for testing interventions.

It’s been a 2-year journey, and our paper "A damage accumulation model identifies distinct aging regimes across species" is out in Nature Aging! We asked: what can we learn from just lifespan data? Turns out, a lot. Paper: doi.org/10.1038/s435... App: srtools-aging.streamlit.app (1/3) 👇

A damage accumulation model identifies distinct aging regimes across species - Nature Aging
Raz and colleagues fit survival data across species to a stochastic model of damage accumulation and removal. They report that damage production rate best predicts lifespan and reveal two distinct agi...

Giant thanks to my amazing co-author Glen Pridham & my PI Uri Alon @urialonlab.bsky.social , and a special thank you to Andrew Rutenberg @rutenberg.bsky.social & Luce Breuil for their help and support! 🎉 We hope that this end-of-life paper is just the beginning! 5/5

his work is the product of an amazing collaboration with Michael Rera @michaelrera.bsky.social , whose work on the Smurf model triggered this adventure. We also look forward to further collaboration with Kenneth Rockwood @krockdoc.bsky.social following up on this work. 4/5

Key findings: 📉 We found a "diminishing twilight"—the later the onset of the end-of-life phase, the shorter it is. 📉 Surprisingly, hazard actually initially drops after end-of-life onset! 3/5

Here we investigate the end-of-life phase across flies, mice, and humans. 🕺🪰🐁 We show that these phases are consistent with the dynamics of damage crossing a sublethal threshold before death, explained by the saturating removal model. 2/5

What happens just before we die? Are the last stages of deterioration driven by different dynamics, or the same processes driving aging all our lives? Turns out it's the latter, as we show in our new preprint! 🔬 doi.org/10.64898/202... 🧵 1/5 #AgingResearch #SystemsBiology
