Bullies fold when nobody flinches.
In 1866, an American congressman tried to buy Canada for $10 million. Here's why it failed, and why it matters right now.
Most Canadians have never heard of Nathaniel Banks. In 1866, this Massachusetts congressman introduced House Resolution 754, a bill that would have turned most of British North America into American states and territories. It came four months after the US cancelled a 12 year trade deal with the colonies, betting that cutting off trade would force Canada to come asking for annexation.
It didn't work. The colonies did the opposite: they traded more with each other and formed their own country a year later.
This video traces that history and connects it to the tariffs, trade threats, and 51st state talk happening today. Same playbook, different century. We look at what Canadians did in 1866 that made the annexation bill collapse, and what buying Canadian looks like now: Ontario cheddar, Okanagan wine, Alberta beef, Quebec cider, coastal lumber, and small businesses hit hardest by the tariffs.
