You're not alone. Many are easily identifiable from images though, many more can get to genus, and a fair few are absolute sods!

Well, it is definitely a Pamphilius species and on willow gyllenhali is most likely though latifrons will sometimes use willow. Yours looks like an eonymph so was ready to burrow.

It is definitely Abia fasciata. Nothing else like it. All other Abia species are metallic bronze coloured. www.sawflies.org.uk/gallery-fami...

I only ever find pectinicornis on roses and yours looks the same but I don't think all Cladius larvae can be separated.

Under recorded is my thinking. There were few recent records. Someone posted on FB last year and sent me some larvae to rear. They emerged in April confirming the species. After receiving them I went to a local Bird Cherry patch and found some there too.

Should be Pristiphora retusa on bird cherry. Worth putting on iRecord.

2026 Sawfly season started for me today with 2 Sooty Grievers (Dolerus anthracinus) at Millington Pastures VC61. Associated with quality chalk grassland here and flies (very) early, so is it really as uncommon as 2 records in last 50 years suggests? @ynuorg.bsky.social #yorkshiresawflies #symphyta
An all black sawfly, Dolerus anthracinus (common name Sooty Griever) sits on a white sweep net bag. A rare sawfly in Yorkshire, associated with good quality chalk grassland and found here at Frendal Dale in Millington Pastures, East Yorkshire.

Actually, just check it isn't Aproceros. Aproceros has an open anal vein in the hind wing and I can't quite see that area of the hind wing. Aprosthema has an enclosed anal cell in the hind wing

Looks about right. They are called Nematus septentrionalis these days.

Difficult to be certain but looks like a cimbicidae sawfly larva rather than tenthredinidae.

I revisited the Euura miliaris sawfly larva earlier today to find an ichneumon wasp working its way around them despite their efforts to defend themselves. Amazing how it holds its wings up to avoid being clobbered!

This presumed braconidae fooled me into thinking it was a sawfly for a moment. Two females feeding on pollen/nectar of Canadian Fleabane. Eyes not as good as they used to be. 🙄

In that area certainly but I don't think we can be definite on species. Could try adding to iNaturalist to see if Liston or Taeger can say for sure. Or try European FB page for Marko Prous.
