Possibly the nerdiest thing I've written for a general audience, my latest for @columbiainsight.bsky.social covers a new study that tests a simpler way to assign proportional blame for climate damages to individual fossil fuel companies. It mostly works. Mostly. columbiainsight.org/study-ties-o...

A court freed $41M in frozen wildfire funds for WA State. Trump's team had already proposed a rule that could freeze it again. My latest for @columbiainsight.bsky.social, from a fuel-break project near White Salmon. Thanks to @wadnr.bsky.social for hosting me: columbiainsight.org/a-court-free...

My new op-ed for @columbiainsight.bsky.social explores my years-long struggle with #Lymedisease and other tick-borne illnesses. I argue from personal experience and the available evidence that we need vaccines for Lyme disease and these other "coinfections." columbiainsight.org/a-new-lyme-d...

My latest for @columbiainsight.bsky.social: A Skamania County commissioner wants mile-wide fuel breaks in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The breaks are being proposed not just for fire safety, but to funnel timber revenue into the county's struggling budget.

I have a story out in @columbiainsight.bsky.social with numbers (lots of numbers) showing how two recently delisted PNW plant species have seen steep population declines since their federal protections were removed. Both plants were delisted because the USFWS argued they had fully recovered.

The Oregon Court of Appeals has ruled against state wildlife officials who tried to quietly weaken protections for migrating salmon. My latest in @columbiainsight.bsky.social on this attempted regulatory sleight-of-hand.

My story in @columbiainsight.bsky.social on forest collaboratives—quasi advisory groups to the Forest Service designed to get enviros and timber folks talking after the timber wars—covers collaboratives' current funding woes, why some enviros like collaboratives, and why some don't.

I have a story out in @columbiainsight.bsky.social on this attempt in the Washington House to defund the Columbia River Gorge Commission. While several news outlets have reported on this, our story provides (what I would like to think is) a larger (and clearer) legal/policy analysis.

I've been waiting for this to drop for weeks. Though keep in mind, the Forest Service has been working to "streamline" environmental oversight for years. This is likely to accelerate a trend already underway.

Although winter is hardly the time to plug a story on #climatechange, I would nonetheless like to share a story I wrote last spring for Earth Island Journal on the effects of extreme heat on #trees. The effects aren't good, but the #science is both interesting and important.
