To be fair, I don’t just give them names. I also give them trauma.

Fact Friday: One of my test readers felt the book was too long and I should split it in two. Their suggested end point? Right after the warehouse battle. I’m sure no one at all would have been upset if the story stopped there…

Fact Friday: most of them will probably never be mentioned in-story, but my notes include birthdates for most major characters. Among other things, having that information helps me keep track of everyone’s ages across the series.

Fact Friday: our resident astrophysics expert Jarrod spoke highly of the level of research I’d put in when he proofread the story. We are both fortunate that he wasn’t reading the first draft, where I had done zero research beyond planet names and just made everything up…

Fact Friday: When I started out, I made Kapteyn’s Star one of the Seven Systems, with planets B and C both being inhabited. The existence of these planets was later refuted, something I didn’t learn until years after, at which point I swapped in the Ross 128 system and Planet “R&D”.

The crew of the Iron Vyper will be returning in Stars Collide! Caught between two warring sides, our heroes continue their quest to uncover who caused the conflict. But in so doing, they must reckon with the reality that not every divide can be bridged, for some things... are better off broken.

Though I respect the typos that sneak through, I still seek to eliminate them. If you’ve spotted a mistake in my book, or any others from the SkyNation library, we’d really appreciate it if you let us know: drive.google.com/drive/folder...

Fact Friday: Carleen is another character who didn’t exist originally. In writing the final battle, I realised that I needed a POV character on the Goliath’s bridge, so went back to the start and worked her into the story, with her taking over the roles of several one-off nameless officers.

Fact Friday: The character of Meryn didn’t exist in my first draft. Verne just conscripted whichever officer was nearest in a given scene to be his translator. This didn’t work, as it made him too reliant on people I wanted him to have more distance from, so I gave him a proper second in command.

It's practically a job requirement for me to be weird. It's the only way I can come up with the stuff for my stories...

Sorry for the delay, everyone, but I've seen the special editions, and I can promise they'll be well worth the wait!

*2-4 syllables. I am a writer. Not a mathematician.

Nathan Greaves - Author @nathan-greaves.bsky.social · 28/08/2026

Fact Friday: Carleen was originally named Carlita, but this was changed pretty quickly, as it sounded too close to Tania and Nadalia for my liking (all being 3-4 syllable names ending in an ‘a’ sound).

Nathan Greaves - Author @nathan-greaves.bsky.social · 21/08/2026

Fact Friday: In the first draft of the story, Vinson’s surname was Trace. I changed it to avoid similarities to Nadalia’s chosen surname of Grace. (I shudder to imagine how the shippers might have reacted to this similarity if it had survived into the final version).

Fact Friday: the unseen apex predators of Proxy – the Arborvenators – are named in honour of my favourite dinosaur, Australovenator. The reader on Discord who referred to them as “tree velociraptors” wasn’t too far off.

Fact Friday: In my very first draft of Stars Apart, Tanya’s name was originally spelled Tania. I changed it after deciding on Nadalia’s name, to avoid them looking and sounding too similar.

I have dozens of unfinished story drafts, going back decades. Some handwritten, some typed, some I even submitted to publishers, but none that I was truly satisfied with. But I don’t regret the time I spent on it all. My writing wouldn’t be what it is today without all of those practice runs.

On July 20th, 1969, the first human being set foot on the moon. In 1985, the date was designated Space Exploration Day, and has been celebrated as such ever since. Now, in 2026… a cool book I wrote about space stuff is coming out that day.

As much as I bemoan the fact that it took almost nine years for Stars Apart to be published, there were benefits to the long wait. It gave me time to outline future instalments, and add concepts to the first book to set up later plot points. I can’t wait to share this crazy universe with readers.

Work on Stars Apart began 3195 days, 22 hours, and 46 minutes ago, on the evening of September 1, 2017. A dozen rejections, one contract, and well over 400 hours of editing time later, I finally have the completed novel in my hands. What a journey it’s been... and it's not over yet.
