Fact Friday: When I started out, I made Kapteyn’s Star one of the Seven Systems, with planets B and C both being inhabited. The existence of these planets was later refuted, something I didn’t learn until years after, at which point I swapped in the Ross 128 system and Planet “R&D”.

Fact Friday: Carleen is another character who didn’t exist originally. In writing the final battle, I realised that I needed a POV character on the Goliath’s bridge, so went back to the start and worked her into the story, with her taking over the roles of several one-off nameless officers.

Fact Friday: The character of Meryn didn’t exist in my first draft. Verne just conscripted whichever officer was nearest in a given scene to be his translator. This didn’t work, as it made him too reliant on people I wanted him to have more distance from, so I gave him a proper second in command.

Fact Friday: Carleen was originally named Carlita, but this was changed pretty quickly, as it sounded too close to Tania and Nadalia for my liking (all being 3-4 syllable names ending in an ‘a’ sound).

Fact Friday: In the first draft of the story, Vinson’s surname was Trace. I changed it to avoid similarities to Nadalia’s chosen surname of Grace. (I shudder to imagine how the shippers might have reacted to this similarity if it had survived into the final version).

I have dozens of unfinished story drafts, going back decades. Some handwritten, some typed, some I even submitted to publishers, but none that I was truly satisfied with. But I don’t regret the time I spent on it all. My writing wouldn’t be what it is today without all of those practice runs.

Work on Stars Apart began 3195 days, 22 hours, and 46 minutes ago, on the evening of September 1, 2017. A dozen rejections, one contract, and well over 400 hours of editing time later, I finally have the completed novel in my hands. What a journey it’s been... and it's not over yet.
