Substitute teaching is strange work. I've been a teacher and teacher educator for more than 20 years and nearly every time I sub I run into something I've never seen before.

There were a few kids that had issues, but there was no way I was going to call a student out by name over speakerphone in front of the entire class. Nope. Not gonna do that. And as I said, I already left a detailed note on her desk.

When I answered, the teacher I subbed for introduced herself and told me I was on speakerphone with her class. She wanted to know if her students were lying to her about how the day went. She also asked me if there were any specific students that had behavior problems. 😬

I had a bizarre experience yesterday. Friday I subbed for a 6th grade teacher. It was a decent day with no major issues. Classes were noisy from time to time, but no major problems. I left the teacher a thorough note accounting for the day period by period. Yesterday I got a call from the teacher.

I sidestepped this issue by writing a book whose sole audience is graduate students learning to conduct research in special education. Boom. Problem solved.

I actually don't mind the syllabus thing. Everything else packaged into the law tho... definitely not a fan.

Public posting of full reading lists and syllabi for undergraduate courses is required for all public colleges and universities in Ohio. Mine are here: kent.simplesyllabus.com/en-US/syllab...

l've been a SA advocate for decades:
NEVER go to campus resources for a SA. Call a rape care hotline/program (off campus), get a SA advocate (they're free), go to a SART hospital for care (and evidence collection if you choose).
They activate the police. Schools have NO business in this process and will minimize and bury it. It's a criminal matter, not an administrative matter.
Period. No exceptions.

Timeline of desk rejection: 5 days - Fine. Thank you. 5 weeks - inconsiderate and unprofessional, but still much faster than a full review 5 months - Total bullshit

Yes, of course. To @eikofried.bsky.social's point, if they only publish invited papers they'd likely have an acceptance rate that is incredibly high, which would be very suspect. Quickly rejecting every non-invited paper could get them down to 30% acceptance.

Nate Stevenson @natestevenson.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I'm willing to bet they have a huge number of desk rejects. A lot of desk rejects (in this case all non-invited papers) keeps the review time low and depresses the acceptance rate.

Prior to the announcement of changes to OSF my team submitted a grant application that heavily relied on OSF. Pretty sure that application is now dead in the water. Has anyone out had successful transitioning to a different platform?

I dropped my kid off at college 500 miles away a couple weeks ago. Am I worried? Of course. But parenting is about raising kids to become fully independent, functional, (and kind) people, not to keep them kids that need to be taken care of forever.

Ownership is the big one. If you publish a survey, assessment, or tool as part of the supplementary files, turn over ownership and usage rights to the publisher. Keeping those documents in a separate repository preserves your ownership and rights.

If it’s just a couple of extra tables I don’t mind those being added as supplementary files. But I totally agree that data files, instruments, and other such items should be housed in a repository and linked in the manuscript, especially if the author wants to retain the rights to their creations.

The Kent Stage does a midnight screening of RHPS every 6-8 weeks. It's baked into the culture of the town. Through the lens of today, it's got issues, to say the least. But I don't think most people today realize what an absolute lifeline it was for so many people over a span of 50+ years.

About Trump v. Barbara: Do not give the Court and the CJ credit for reading and upholding the Constitution. It's a travesty that this is not a unanimous decision... it's also a travesty that the Court let this question percolate for a year, giving credence to a crank theory of citizenship.

Just an utter failure of public policy. I don't blame individual teachers for leaving their position or profession. Teaching is wicked-hard and only getting harder as state and federal government continues to piss all over public education.
