I've been telling people for 25 years that Jane Street is not interested in formal methods. No more! And we're actively hiring to form a new formal methods team! blog.janestreet.com/formal-metho...

Formal methods and the future of programming
I’ve been telling people for the last 25 years that Jane Street as an organization was just not interested in formal methods.

Ahh yes. I was a long term visitor and had a badge. Anyway, it was a very nice bike room!

Is there not a bike room still? I have vague memories of using it ca. 2006…

Congratulations to Dr. Mark Moeller! He wrote a very nice PhD dissertation and passed his B-exam (Cornell-speak for "dissertation defense") with flying colors. He'll start as an Assistant Professor at Holy Cross in a few months...

Looking forward to the study team’s future work on the socio-technical aspects of other ABSes: American Bible Society, Adaptive Bitrate Streaming, the Arch Build System, Antigua Broadcasting Service, Cadillac braking systems, etc.

I think the feeling is not to glorify but ask: if the French will mobilize to protest something like raising the retirement age by a couple of years, why do we do nothing as our entire republic slips away?

Both are calendar year and prorated as needed. Until recently, Cornell’s policy was 10 vacation days per calendar year, plus 13 university holidays. The grad student union negotiated for an increase to 12 vacation days in the contract signed in 2025.

Nate Foster @natefoster.bsky.social · 28/03/2026
To be clear: I like your policy! I might not put it on the web as some of the policies it is in tension with may have legal ramifications. And this illustrates some of the issues with treating PhD students as sort-of students / sort-of employees… work conditions depend on the advisor / lab culture.

At EPFL, all PhDs get 5 weeks of paid vacation, two of which must be taken consecutively, in addition to 9 public holidays. So 36 days in total! But I wouldn’t have known how to pull this off in the US…

I’m also curious: how do you square your group’s enlightened vacation guidelines with Cornell HR and/or effort certification on federal grants? Perhaps you fund part of every student on gift/discretionary funds to cover the difference?

Nice, but it seems confused on the definitions of assistantships at CU. For example, GRA != RA != GA. Also, the Grad School says "Hourly limits for GRA appointments are not explicitly defined..." vs. your "GRA and TA both represent a certain, bounded amount of work in terms of hours per week."

There are many good ideas for improving reviewing culture in CS. But the core issues cut much deeper. So, while mechanism is important, we believe simple mechanistic fixes are unlikely to be effective. With NINeS, we are creating a community and a culture that is truly different.
