for game #12, i added a customer serving motif so you can work out what's best without being told. the customer loves it, but the boss doesn't. i'm also exploring the cartoon side of soundly, and the sfx trend quite whimsical. link in bio #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

for game #11, medical stuff knocked me off the horse for a bit, and this was my first turn getting back on. it's about filling a cup, not too little, not too full, just the perfect amount please. kind of fitting. link in bio #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

for game #10, my wife and i recorded ourselves doing the handshake moves, then i traced over the hands frame by frame to animate them. it took way too long to draw the hands 🙈 link in bio #gamedev #indiedev #indiegame

for game #9, i was inspired by "smart" kettles, which make you work so hard to get the most simple task done. as always, the sound effects make it 🫖 link in bio #withoutmygadgets1 #gamedev #indiedev

for game #8 i tried one of those switch-flipping phone games. it's funny how quickly it balloons into chaos, even though the last level takes four moves.. it reminds me of learning a rubik's cube. huh, i wonder if you could teach that through a game like this. 🤔 link in bio

Hey there! I go by Nat on the internet. I spent the last decade building games with zero playtesting or release schedules. Now I'm making and releasing one tiny tiny TINY game every day and helping others do the same. Check it out: maketinygames.com

Cool! Is this for Kinetic Canvas? I guess you wouldn't need much lore for an app like that :)

Man, it's more like, *if life is just a hobby, y'know? You can make great money from your hobbies and never have to work a day in your life. Most of success comes down to who your parents are and the colour of their skin. But what's in your control is how much you enjoy what you do. Small games ftw.

I just resent the hustle culture assumption, y'know? Some people learn well by exploring and don't need the pressure of perfection in order to improve.

I get what you're saying I just think there's more than one way to go in life. And yeah if you're trying to make games full-time job having a focused way of doing it works well. But also some of the most fun we've had has been making tiny games that don't mean anything.

Hot take. Imo your first game is only as important as it is new. Just get it over with and start worrying about the success of your 10th game.

Cheers - we're currently pretty happy with table lists and matrices in Odin but if we have a need for a more fully fledged spreadsheet visualiser we'll give it a try ✨

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 28/04/2025
Hey! Appreciate the hustle - but sorry, we can actually do that + more with Odin already

This is really good, though! What's your secret?

😆 we need new sci-fi at this point

Definitely up our alley! 👀

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 24/04/2025
Yeah I like that. More games should turn the spotlight inward and address some of the shared challenges of indie game dev

Thanks! Curious: any ideas as to why?

Thanks @mobuos.dev! yeah we've been playing with random sprites but it's actually more performance heavy in particle emitters than you'd first think 🤔 Personally I'm not a fan when the resolution is completely out of sync like in A. But I do like C 😁

I think maybe my nostalgic inner child is a purist and I've been chasing the completely grid-locked pixel look BUT still want the modern fanciness :') I'm learning it's about personal taste re where you stick to the grid. E.g. there are some HD effects that are not to my taste (e.g. Octopath)

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 24/04/2025
🙌 congrats!

Can anyone recommend some upcoming indie games that look & feel like Cult of the Lamb or Spiritfarer? I've got a starterpack I want to add them to go.bsky.app/BQLNBaG If you're making that game, please reach out! #indiegame #gamedev #indiegamedev #cozygame

I guess it's smoke, doesn't have to be perfect 😀

Good call 🙏 thanks for your thoughts!

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 23/04/2025
Interesting, thanks! I take it you don't mind the wonky pixels? (they're not fitting the grid)

Gotta have a good dump zone 😁

Cheers! Yeah I think the rotated pixels can work when subtle right? 🤔

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 23/04/2025
The conundrum with particle fx in pixel art is you either get interesting variations or pixel perfect. You can choose from mismatched pixel sizes, zero variation, or rotated pixels. Here are the three approaches, each with something new to tolerate. Choose your fighter? #indiegame #gamedev #art

Ahh metaballs - nice! Yeah we've got a rudimentary form of growth/shrinking in the video (skip to the end), but it's error prone and not performant. I like the NS2 ref, will definitely explore that in more detail. Thanks!

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 21/04/2025
Yeah, totally. The trouble comes when you start trying to expand or contract it in a way that looks organic / natural.

If you're liking SO's, you might also be interested to explore the world of ini files - they're basically SO-lite: very lightweight and engine agnostic data containers

Oh hell yeah 🔥 make sure you celebrate to really compact the dopamine in there 😁

Experimenting with the growth and contraction of mycelium. This spongey fungus provides fertile ground for "buildings" called Blooms. We're trying to find a balance of visual clarity without overcomplicating the border algorithm. Has anyone done anything like this before? #indiegame #gamedev

Where they get particularly useful is when you couple them with an interface suited for your use-case. E.g. we use Odin to jazz up the interface so that our SO data can be viewed in a searchable table, graph, etc.

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 21/04/2025
Hello- scriptable objects are data structures like any other: arrays and dictionaries are also very strong and versatile, right? You can think of them as Unity's abstraction of the inspector interface, so anything you might want a GameObject for, you might consider using a SO instead

Yo that's actually a cool idea. You should find a way to pick out sets of photos though; a lot of the time I take 3-4 photos of the same thing and only want one out of the set (I should stop spamming the button but I'll never learn 😅)

Nat Delnova @natdelnova.itch.io · 19/04/2025
Ah yeah that's awesome. Haha, I procrastinated an entire law degree doing that ✨
