The other thing about Van City is their VAs do great ‘empowering/encouraging’ reads. They aren’t sappy-connection reads. There’s definitely more of a hand-holding we’ll be ok vibe to the soft-breathy ads. I hesitate to use ‘emotional manipulation’ to describe them, but some of them are VERY close.

Van City is a bit of a tough one in this instance, bcs they’re my gold standard for credit union ‘good vibes doing good together’ ads - they’ve been consistent w/this energy in their ads for YEARS. If I ever hear a Van City ad swing corporate or distant in vibe, I’ll know something’s VERY wrong! 😆

Tend to agree with that, but noticed it’s also banks & credit unions. Credit Unions have always tended to have a more us vs them/ David vs Goliath undertone to their ads, but there’s a subtle difference now. I’m wondering if it’s a bit of twitchy monkey-hear-monkey-get-the-ad-agency-to-do going on.

I feel like the last time we had so many soft, breathy, ‘we’re in this together’-vibe radio ads (notably read by mostly women/fem sounding folks) was back in the 1st half of Covid, during lock down. Honestly, it’s got me wondering what’s going on that companies are preemptively soothing customers.

I should probably point out I’m not talking about cut scenes, but rather discussions going on as a player is either moving through an environment, fighting, searching for stuff, etc. (Dynamic enviromental banter…? I don’t know the term.) Although cut scene banter timing is crucial, and awesome, too.

And then you might have to add radio bursts at the start and end to signal chatter, or maybe one/both characters have unique voice designs, so you have added elements you need to make sure are clear with whatever sounds the player is dealing with organically in the environment. F*ck yeah!

Trying to doze off, but brain wants to muse. So I’m thinking about the timing of banter in games. How you need to time it relatively perfectly to make it sound natural, keep the flow of the scene going, and have the volume of everything just right to prevent blurring. A magical, underrated skill.

Watching a One Lap YT video of the 2025 ID BUZZ being whipped arnd on a race track, and OMG, I am so full of glee, I’m just cackling. Our little seahorse fell in love with a power-lesbian salamander type! (No I don’t know for sure the salamander type is a power lesbian, but that’s the vibe she gives. And for a species that sings their young into being, having two moms is no problem, at all.)
