Same re family riddled with people with serious life-destroying mental ill-health including some who were deemed/perceived as terribly successful (who were episodically/always dysfunctional and very distressed at home). Amazing what being a clever, articulate white person with an RP accent can mask.

Seasonal PSA - beware Halloween food coloured black! Its almost always charcoal used for this and it can reduce or prevent your uptake of oral medications, including antidepressants, painkillers and birth control.

2017 Mental Health of Children and Young People survey designed for mental health and 1%: Brugha et al. (2011) now 20 years old. So 2006 regional study of children born in 1990–91, a 2017 survey that wasn’t designed to count autism, and a 2007 adult survey...rest my case.

Basically, yep. I was bitching with a colleague at work who is a visual impairment rehab specialist today and how sensory impaired people get screwed by cost-cutting changes, low incidence, high impact and low clue by Powers That Be. Still mourning the loss of sensory specialists funding.

If you're (SFE) sending out an incomplete DSA letter "to hit the KPIs" please TELL the student that is the case and the reason their Outstanding Support is delayed rather than just leaving the student BAFFLED. Also, SFE can you PLEASE list the equipment on the DSA2 like you're SUPPOSED TO!

The QT reasons are in part why I didn't manage to get a lunchbreak (or food) and consequently died on my face 15 mins before my day-end-time. I'm still not quite 100% after Wednesday's vaccines either. My partner has bought home some fabulous hummous and a baguette 😋 which I've just scoffed.

I feel my life is just endless fixing of DSA failings for students with sensory & complex impairments. Over and over again obvious support just not there, or misunderstandings of the stupid new regs. SFE's replies are like a broken record "sorry, the DSA team did not do what they were supposed to"

I just managed to skimread the executive summary of the autism and ADHD report which I think is worth a read. It is a lot more nuanced than the headlines suggest. www.gov.uk/government/p... That doesn't mean I don't think there are political risks; media misrepresentation of this shows the risk.

My sinuses are such a hot mess that they can Go Grotty without any external lurgy to set them off (cos there's pathogens everywhere on/inside our bodies, which non-microbiologists don't want to think about too hard). Main plan is up my nasal spray and see GP for antibiotics quicker if it grots.

I work 100% from home thankfully (v grateful for that given how shite work ventilation, lighting and temperature are) and indeed have a box of N95s I think somewhere. We're still masking inside supermarkets and places with significant numbers of people (we never stopped).

I think most of the headlines seem to be bunk or a misrepresentation of something more nuanced. I'm recommending folk read the report for ourselves cos we knwo the media lie for clicks.

Frustrating cos from a skimread the report doesn't say what the headlines claim. They're just clickbait now. www.gov.uk/government/p... I will try and read after work. It might even be legit work reading 🤣...

Feeling mostly normal this morning. I took extra long-lasting pain meds last night to nix the joint pain which seemed to work. Now I need to book my meds review with GP so I can renew my prescriptions and hit winter prep for avoiding respiratory grot. Last year I was ill from late Oct to Feb.

Ugh. I recommend making a "clinical concern" complaint, it goes through a less bullshit complaints process than PALS and hits a clinician. This is risking your clinical care and it's causing you undue distress, the sort of thing that could make some people pull out of surgery entirely.

Author is quoted as saying Streeting was wrong claiming over diagnosis was common... I suspect we need to read the report for ourselves (which will have to wait for after work for me www.gov.uk/government/p... is the report link anyway.

I note the BBC's 'live' headlines are misleading on the autism and ADHD report. Over diagnosis is only a 'risk' due to unregulatedness of providers and seems a small part of report. Report more clearly seems to say undx is real, waiting lists too long, no aftercare or support while waiting.
151
Natalya D @natalyad.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The BBC at least headlines are also lying. The report does not say autism and ADHD are over diagnosed, it says "there's a risk with unregulated private providers". Author explicitly said Wes Streeting was wrong claiming over diagnosis. Also under-diagnosis is more likely in older age groups...

“Instead of incendiary press releases on an isolated enforcement action… the government should take steps to address the many issues in the asylum system & ensure that people fleeing persecution are treated with dignity & compassion.” Hostile asylum policy, not “bogus” claims, is the main problem.

We eventually got round to putting the tent up and it had been improperly stored (probably not dried out) and was full of chocolate bar wrappers cos one of the separated couple who used it most was basically A Childish Twit. We didn't kick off tho, just said "Oh, it's dead" and got on with it.

Natalya D @natalyad.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Weird isn't it. These scenarios are often contrived though. My partner and I bought a tent with another couple back when we were all skint. We left it with them as they used it more and then several years later after they split up, we were asked to take it back which we did.
110
Natalya D @natalyad.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Buy a new tent and maybe the one who kept the original tent contributes something towards the new tent cost. But honestly how much did they spend on a festival tent? After 8 years tent material can go a bit grotty either from sunlight or rubber issues in storage.

I feel like the living dead today (probably Covid vaccine, it usually does this). I'm hoping the pain meds will knock off the stupid joint pain and that the chills have passed the worst. Still beats ActualCovid (and flu) by miles. Extra tea for this morning's (useful) team meeting.

Lots of my ND PGR students rate the ReMarkable tablets as a way to handle the 50 million different notebooks/papers problem. Dunno what their operating system is or if they'd run Zotero but they do definitely enable PDF annotation from what I hear.

We don't have any e-ink experience since the original kindles which were clunky compared to what we have now. I hear people really like e-ink for extra reading just a bit less stressful than standard screens and so on.

I find it strange that people don't want others to learn about other religions/cultures/festivals. I only learned about Hanukkah after I was an adult. I loved Year 9 RE when they stopped boring us with bible stuff and let us learn about different faiths.

My Grandpa worked on Xmas day in the 50s and 60s (not sure about later) because he was a licenced Grocer in Glasgow and his shop had a Kosher counter and Jewish customers shopped that day. Mum says Hogmanay was always bigger for them at home.

Indeed, but I can see why some Jewish people would not have felt safe anywhere in Germany... According to 'Here Where We Live Is Our Country: The story of the Jewish Bund' by Molly Crabapple claims 30s/40s occupied areas pushed Jews to leave to Palestine while blocking them from going elsewhere

I find even 1 jab usually quite arm-deady and my 'weaker' non-doinant and more impaired arm was easier to relax cos I use it less whereas my dominant arm is hyper-dominant and has rare and obscure missing bits of biceps tendon so tends to be hyper-tense all the time anyway.

a little louder for the cheap seats in the back
One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

Part of me thinks if North America supports the concept of a safe Jewish ethnostate (something I do recognise some Jewish people feel is a safety thing in this world even if I don't like it) then the USA should provide the land and support for it on their landmass...

It was shit in the late 90s and then 2000s when I first started disability work. I don't understand how PSBAR hasn't forced universities to say to TII "make this work for staff or else we'll ditch your contract". If I was that staff I'd probably be feeling rather legally tetchy!

Not sure I'm a 2 stater (I don't know if I can support Israel continuing to exist in any form) if 2 states: Palestine should 100% have equality of arms (and intelligence assets + everything else) with Israel. Idealistically I'd like less violence but I don't know enough on how to avoid that.

We're lucky we can afford to do this. I don't need vertigo/other risk from either flu or Covid. My sinuses can make me ill enough without other people's germs. Pharmacist was lovely and agreed to left arm for both so hopefully I won't have dominant arm pain (I'm use to not using my left much).

Achievement unlocked: Covid with 'free' flu jab at same time with Cohens Pharmacies for £85 each which seems cheapest widely available in UK. I'm not eligible for either jab on NHS + work now maxes vaccine reclaim at £15 total a year if I work some hoops. Partner only eligible for NHS flu.

Yeah it was staff I was thinking of as I know some who use screenreaders (or TTS) or magnification who find it very difficult. I'd argue under PSBAR we should be mandating TurnItIn to FIX that kthxbai but it takes persistent kicking off and from personal experience that makes you very unpopular...
