We also need guarantees that: — Housing justice advocates & housing insecure folks will directly shape & govern this new fund — It will be housed in a new "authority" outside MDHA, which has a poor track record on evictions & tenant rights — The budget will fund 3 new positions to guarantee success

Bonds and a revolving loan fund are essential to our housing platform, but financing is only one piece of the puzzle. Our full demand is for housing that is: — Permanently affordable — Owned by the city or a community organization (decommodified) — Controlled by tenants and community partners

We asked the mayor for $10 mil for permanently affordable social housing: $9.5 mil for a revolving loan fund to cover debt on bonds used to build housing & $500k for staffing. In response, the mayor’s recommended budget includes $7 mil for a revolving loan fund to create a housing bond!

Grade: D Our communities already know how to prevent and effectively respond to harm. We don’t need to wait for your Task Force to tell us what we already know. We need $$$ to do it ourselves.
grade: D

More than 60% of Nashvillians want more safety resources that actually “reduce crime.” A majority of the thousands of residents we have engaged over the last half decade have been crystal clear that our current reactionary system of “public safety” and surveillance is not meeting most residents’ needs, and is in fact making things worse. Residents want meaningful public investment into resources that produce genuine safety without police, courts, or jails.

Our communities already know how to prevent and effectively respond to harm. We don’t need to wait for your Task Force to tell us what we already know. We need $$$ to do it ourselves.

2. We asked: "...Will you commit to making major increases to funding for community-based safety programs this budget cycle?”
2. We asked:

“At the launch of your Community Safety Task Force, you said, ‘There is more to safety than policing.’ I agree with you on that. But the city spends about $800 million on police, courts, and jails, but only $5 million on preventative community safety options. I think we agree that’s not enough for alternatives to police. Will you commit to making major increases to funding for community-based safety programs this budget cycle?”

The mayor did mention a possible pilot for a new “housing bond,” which we would embrace — if it is used to build permanently affordable, city-owned, community-governed social housing!

Grade: C- Rather than commit to investing in housing we can actually afford to stay in, the mayor boasted about his admin’s meager accomplishments.

1. We asked: “...will you commit to making unprecedented investments this budget cycle into permanently affordable social housing, including through the use of bonds?”
1. We asked:

“You recently said affordability and safety are your top priorities. When you ran for mayor, you told us you ‘want us to stay.’ Your affordable housing investments have not met the urgency of the crisis we’re facing. If affordability is still a top priority for you, will you commit to making unprecedented investments this budget cycle into permanently affordable social housing, including through the use of bonds?”

$25 million to guarantee housing and safety for all! If Mayor O'Connell really wants us to “stay,” he will allocate $10 mil for *permanently* affordable social housing. If he really believes that “there is more to safety than policing,” he will allocate $15 mil for non-police community safety.
