Black History Month: The Photographers Who Documented a Movement
In honor of Black History Month, it's time to recall the photographers who have been instrumental in documenting and influencing the African American narratives. The photographic community and beyond have been forever changed by the groundbreaking efforts of Gordon Parks, James Van Der Zee, Kwame Brathwaite, Stanley Wolfson, Carl Van Vechten, and many others who have captured critical times and portraying the African American experience, challenging societal norms, and fostering a greater understanding of Black identity and history.

The Compact seeks to remake universities in the image of the MAGA movement: obedient, culturally monolithic, inward-looking, patriarchal, and illiberal. By conditioning federal funding on compliance, it invites schools to participate in their own undoing.

When political violence makes headlines, it’s tempting to respond in the moment by posting, commenting, and sharing. But what we say and how we say it matters deeply because political violence isn’t just a policy issue, it's a narrative issue.

Myths don’t disappear on their own. We have to organize around something bigger. We’re calling for a shift toward a Model Majority—a narrative rooted in equity, interdependence, and solidarity and reflects the power of Asian American communities. One that insists our futures are tied together.

Narrative Initiative @narrativepower.bsky.social · 28/05/2025
For AAPI History Month, we’re asking: What would it take to move beyond the Model Minority Myth—and toward a Model Majority? Narratives shape what people believe about power, possibility, and belonging. The Model Minority Myth has done deep harm, divided communities, and erased histories.
Three people sit close together at an outdoor restaurant table, smiling at the camera. Plates of food and glasses of wine and water are in front of them. The person on the left wears a Beerlao shirt and beanie, the person in the middle wears a light blue shirt, and the person on the right wears a cream-colored sweater. Behind them is a colorful mural and a wooden wall. The mood is warm and joyful.

We must continue to challenge the dominant idea that top-down systems alone can fix what’s broken in healthcare. Real solutions are alive in our communities. It’s up to us to pay attention to them. Read the full blog piece here: www.narrativeinitiative.org/blog-meeting...
Historical photo tinted pink and black of five men seated at a long table with microphones, appearing to hold a press conference. The men, who are Black and white, include members of the Black Panther Party and Young Patriots Organization, symbolizing multiracial solidarity. Text above reads: “03 Solidarity and Shared Struggles – Solidarity looks like communities supporting and empowering themselves and each other to lead and determine their own futures. This narrative is often deployed to express how communities share similarities despite their differences and how those similarities are opportunities to build power.”

This is the same spirit we see in The Courage in Care, our exhibit honoring community doulas in New Jersey, who are redefining birth care as a joyful, justice-driven act of community support. Real change starts with the people most impacted, leading the way toward a future of dignity and care.
Tinted pink and black is an image of two women standing side by side holding protest signs. One sign reads “NO WALLS – Freedom for Our Families” with an illustration of a woman breaking through a brick wall. The other reads “Support Wisconsin Dairy Workers – Driver Licenses for All.” Text above them reads: “02 Deservingness – Deservingness can show up as a helpful or harmful narrative, depending on context. Used strategically, these narratives present an opportunity for building cross movement solidarity.”

This blog is for narrative strategists, healthcare advocates, and organizers to reimagine how we talk about and advance health equity. You'll find narrative tools and real-world stories to help reframe healthcare—from scarcity and exclusion to abundance, solidarity, and power.
Tinted in black and purple image of a woman and a young girl embracing with eyes closed, conveying care and calm. The girl smiles softly. Text above reads: “01 Abundance – This is a mobilizing narrative. Use this when you need to shift people and audiences from scarcity towards a future where everyone is cared for, on a community and individual level.”
