Curious why leading a media frenzy resulting in a man’s death isn’t considered enough to constitute a “clear threat of lasting and substantial harm” by these people.
We commend Petra De Sutter, Rector of Ghent University, for her statement to the Belgian newspaper De Morgen, that "As a university, we have a responsibility to create space for debate, but also to ensure an environment where people feel heard and respected."

We agree that creating space for debate is an essential element of a university, and that space for debate should not be closed unless this is a last resort to prevent a clear threat of lasting substantial harm.

should we maybe consider speed bumps or extended curbs before jumping to this cybersecurity nightmare?

i understand the frustration and fear around how car centric our infrastructure is but jumping to mass surveillance instead of basic infrastructure changes that make huge differences is textbook reactionary.

bonus: no risk of unaccountable law enforcement abusing the mass surveillance network you built to hand out tickets for speeding (famously a poverty tax).

this is the problem with seeing technology as the only possible solution for systemic problems and being prone to reactionary carceral thinking. there is plenty of evidence that changes to infrastructure (e.g. extending curbs at intersections and adding medians etc) reduce risks to pedestrians.

In a post Roe world where violent and degrading rhetoric about women is all the rage for way too many people, I just cannot get on board with the idea that the way to solve the gender wars is for women to give in.

Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 01/06/2026
There’s this weird implication in the failure to engage fully with why men engage in “heterpessimism” that the misogyny of these men cannot be helped or meaningfully addressed and so the only way to address the gender divide is for women ignore or disregard their fears of misogynistic violence.

Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 01/06/2026
There is an interesting article in here that could have been written about the “heteropessimism” of men. Namely, that it stems from really destructive misogynistic beliefs and that discarding those beliefs and seeking a more egalitarian relationship would be better for their dating prospects.
100
Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 01/06/2026
The most frustrating thing about this is that the author acknowledges that the reasons women opt out of dating men is often fear of misogyny and the reasons men opt out is… misogyny. And yet she spends almost the entire article trying to convince women to change their behavior.

yeah thats true… i guess i just find it weird to blame a widely held belief (in some circles) on a guy who explicitly out loud does not believe it.

I can’t help but think about what impact that kind of honest and unflinching photo journalism would look like today. What kind of impact would it have?

Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 15/05/2026
I found a copy of the April 1976 issue of Time magazine and I was struck by the photo journalism. Pieces about violence in the world were accompanied by actual images of the violence not just men holding guns or bombed out structures.

I can’t help but think these men would be happier people if they weren’t so clouded by their own misogyny. It’s hard to even be angry after a certain point. I really just feel pity.

This article shares the stories of multiple single women and their dating woes but something interesting to me is that the men these women dated also ended up single. They couldn’t get out of their own way. I’m not really a fan of the whole “patriarchy hurts men too” thing but…

Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
Both things are rooted in heavily gendered approaches to self identity. Specifically a prescriptivist approach to gender. Who are you outside of being a man? Are those parts of yourself served by actions carried out in service of “being a man”? If not, what value does that behavior bring to you?
100
Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
To me this issue is two-fold: 1) expectation and desire for a level of control over the terms of a relationship that all but rule out the possibility of parity 2) inability to understand or conceptualize the reasons for entering a relationship outside of financial coercion
100
Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
This is non exhaustive but off the top of my head: love, companionship, emotional support, physical intimacy, coparenting (if you’re into that sort of thing) and many, many more things.

Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
The allure of financial and housing stability does not out-weigh the threat of abuse or infidelity, especially when you can attain those things independently. So then what exactly can men bring to a relationship beyond financial stability?
100
Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
Now that it is possible to gain financial and legal independence without the involvement of a man, the game theory of this “transaction” has changed. What is required in order to convince a woman to enter and subsequently stay in such a transaction has changed.
110
Nana Porter-Honicky @narmph.info · 13/05/2026
Many men are raised and conditioned to see romantic and sexual relationships as largely if not entirely transactional. “Traditional gender roles” mainly serve to make this transaction incredibly coercive in favor of the man.

What are we even doing here? I’m going to us AI to filter your application out based on key words but if you use AI to customize your application to the job posting it’s a bad look.
In today's competitive job market, it's safe to say your resume is being scanned, not read, by hiring managers and recruiters.
With hundreds of applications being received per open role, employers spend an average of just 11.2 seconds on each resume, according to a study done by AI-powered interview platform InterviewPal. While this number varies from company to company, the reality is that in today's artificial intelligence world, the decision to move a candidate forward is sometimes shaped by AI tools that filter applications before a human even sees it. Therefore, one small mistake or missed opportunity can easily cost a candidate the chance to advance.
Forbes spoke to a few recruiters and workplace experts about what they actually look for in those first few seconds of scanning your resume
- and how you can increase your chances of moving to the next round. While AI has its benefits, Rathod and Green agree that relying on it too much when applying for jobs can do more harm than good. In fact, 67% of hiring managers say AI-generated resumes have negatively impacted the hiring process because there's been a surge of applicants using the tool to fabricate or embellish their experiences, and there's been an increase in applications that all look the same.
"What I'm seeing is a lot of people going to Al, pulling the raw feedback they receive and not customizing it," says Green. She adds that
"putting in a cookie-cutter Al merged resume from the job description is really doing yourself a discredit."
Rather than submitting a generic resume, Green and Rathom advise candidates to personalize their documents so recruiters notice right away their unique capabilities.

This is apart of a much larger trend of people being appointed to positions they are completely unqualified for and do not even fully understand because their only conviction is toeing the party line.

I guess my question would be, why is he surgeon general? Isn’t it his job to recommend for or against certain treatments, interventions, and procedures? If he’s so uncomfortable giving guidance on public health he is not qualified for the job an should resign.

There are definitely people with jobs or positions they are completely unqualified for because of who they know or who they’re related to. Those are nepo babies. But people seem to cast a much wider net with the term than just that.

The whole nepo baby thing never fully made sense to me. I am engineer, my father is an engineer. I am I a nepo baby? Maybe, I guess. But it seems obvious to me that growing up around a certain profession will give access to resources and a nurturing environment starting very young.

The ideology that parents should have full autonomy over the lives and bodies of their children is incredibly dangerous. Mis/disinformation about medical care only compounds the ill effects.

This kind of thing is why always have mixed feelings about the stories about little black prodigies with a ton of degrees and accomplishments at like 12. I always wonder if they are safe and happy and love what they do. As gifted little black girl, it was awesome that I got to just be a kid.
