RedCat, Pokémon, Def Jam, and Portal mark very specific times of my life, like some media can do (like Fullmetal Alchemist and House MD, for me). Me and my partner played through Obra Dinn together while we were falling in love, so that excellent game also has a very special place for me.

That Paper Mario game is just so full of interesting, fun, smart stuff. We were a detective household, so the send up of Agatha Christie really hit the spot, and I also remember the wrestling saga fondly. O! And the challenging last boss fight that was about as Final Fantasy as I will ever handle.

It's great, and the extended anecdote about his parents stealing a, uh, let's say "prop" from the private school they both worked at, is beautiful and hilarious. If, in his next special, Pope manages to integrate his through-line even more tightly into his material, it's going to be a perfect score.

Up to about halfway, you feel like this is the hour of a very charming, fast-talking book seller that might not have a whole lot to say, but then Pope starts to tie his digressions back into the main story of the special: not the eponymous cut of his member, but his father's Parkinson's disease.

Pope's strongest comedic chop is the art of the interjection. Just that little 'classic combo' he wiggles in there when he talks about his parents being a mom and a dad. He's also adept at metaphors, calling books 'a podcast you can touch' or CDs 'a frisbee that could sing'.
