Perspective paper for #chemsky to read: pubs.rsc.org/su/article/4... YEAH that's literally my situation. No financial education, mom isn't a neurosurgeon and dad isn't an attorney so I have no $ buffer, and yes student debt. I have a concept for a suschem start-up with little means to start it.

Last 35mm film developed in my 70's can of Microdol-X; Fomapan 100, shot at 50. Interesting result I think, smooth gradation and somewhat sharp but also slightly fuzzy? Who also uses superfine grain developers? #filmisnotdead #betteronfilm #filmphotography #blackandwhite #fomapan

Inside the mind of an organic chemist: 1H NMR of a failed reaction. Two scenarios. The first scenario: What happens: shows a FT, it is transformed via a Fourier transform, and it generates a messy spectrum with a forest of peaks in the resulting spectrum. There is no product here. The second scenario: What we see: Shows the same FID, the same Fourier transform, but this time the spectrum has a flat baseline. The only signal is a hand coming off the baseline holding up its middle finger. It's mocking us....always mocking us.

Simulated "Mars lightning" (electrostatic discharge) converts simple salts and CO2 into minerals that have isotope signatures matching the Curiosity rover's observations. This suggests that dust activity may chemically reshape the Martian surface! 🧪 www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
A conceptual model of the Mars global contemporary surface-atmosphere Cl cycle and air-borne carbonates that is consistent with the results of the linked paper.

1 & 2) The HEC induced by dust-driven ESD partially decomposes the surface chloride mineral.

3) HEC produces volatile ClI* (37Cl-depleted) from chlorides; along with 13C- and 18O-depleted species CO2+ CO* and O* from CO2; and minor amounts of (per)chlorate, carbonate, and activated oxide are also formed by HEC reactions but with lower conversion rates than the volatile species.

4) The atmospheric HEC products (with depleted 37Cl, consistent with mission observations) are deposited onto the surface, forming new (per)chlorate, chloride, and carbonate mineral deposits having isotopic depletions in 37Cl, 18O, and 13C, consistent with mission observations.

In addition, there is a possibility that the Cl-bearing products deposited on the Martian surface could lead to the formation of Cl-salt rich brines that may percolate below the subsurface and flow out in the form of (7) RSL (recurring slope lineae) that generated the modern Cl-deposits (6).

As chloride salt rich deposits are modified by ongoing dust-driven HEC, the progressive depletion of 37Cl would continue, leading further towards the negative δ37Cl values observed in surface Cl-bearing minerals by SAM-Curiosity on Mars.

Development is complete for my single roll for the #fp4party and I cannot wait to see the scans with the developer I chose. Glad that the metal can did its job wonderfully to keep the powder from oxidation! Maybe we should bring them back 🤔 #believeInFilm

This is so, so well-articulated.
People call this friction "grunt work." Schwartz uses exactly that phrase, and he's right that LLMs can remove it. What he doesn't say, because he already has decades of hard-won intuition and doesn't need the grunt work anymore, is that for someone who doesn't yet have that intuition, the grunt work is the work. The boring parts and the important parts are tangled together in a way that you can't separate in advance. You don't know which afternoon of debugging was the one that taught you something fundamental about your data until three years later, when you're working on a completely different problem and the insight surfaces. Serendipity doesn't come from efficiency. It comes from spending time in the space where the problem lives, getting your hands dirty, making mistakes that nobody asked you to make and learning things nobody assigned you to learn.

Only 5 more frames of Lucky Color 200 before I load @ilfordphoto.com FP4+ in the LX for the #fp4party. I should be able to shoot a dozen frames today, with the rest uuuhhh... At some point! TBD! Since I started to bulk load Foma and Lucky films, 36 exposures can feel a little daunting 😣
