people are saying the Kentucky Wildcats keep winning because they're the only SEC football team actively posting to Bluesky

Nothing like walking through the business school carrying a full chromatic set of boomwhackers past large groups of folks in suits to elevate the status of music at our University!

Learned today that "lecturer on a US river cruise" is a potential employment opportunity. Although it was described as "not glamorous" it is now something to which I aspire.

Questions students (both pre-college & college) have asked me recently for which I have no and/or an inadequate answer: Why is your phone (iphone 13 mini) so small & old? When will [X] assignment be graded? Why do you have many tabs & apps open on your laptop?

Is it really the first day of class unless you had a moment of panic in the way to work thinking wait, what do I do on the first day of class?!?

Any readings you would recommend for a grad intro to music research related to AI? Looking for something deeper than AI is bad / AI is the future

Beginning to think about thinking about working on fall syllabi. Will have to convert a class that was MWF to TR & obvi shouldn't be that big of a deal but is stupid hard.

A sort of Canvas-outage related email from student asking for (more) grace that began "This class has been a joy. I know I was asleep sometimes..." ed. note, it was all the times, lol But yeah, the grace was granted (again)

Canvas being down five minutes before the deadline for the very last assignment is really doing a number on my email inbox

I'm always a little mystified by the student who shows up for the final exam who has done little/zero work for the entire class & no chance of passing. Is it a personal challenge? Is it a challenge to me? Blind hope?

So many of our students release new music, but yesterday a student that I had in first year seminar years ago & in senior seminar this semester gave me a CD (like a real live CD with a cute cover & everything) of their soon to be released EP. Warmed my cold, dead heart just a little.

Talking about REM in the pop history class today is making feel some type of way. Also, I miss Athens, GA.

Using voice-to-text feature to comment on a student assignment. Thought it was turned off but thankfully noticed it was still transcribing... Charles Barkley's commentary on Spurs/Blazers game. Probably shoulda left it there to see if student would notice.

This obit is something (pianist for Heifetz! arrested?!). I don't have strong feelings about MTT but when the Keeping Score series went online during covid, I was grateful. Still use clips of those in my intro music history course. RIP

The point in the semester when my very chill late-work policy shows up to smack me in the face. It's really something to see an assignment that needs grading in Canvas with a January due date.

Small existential crisis bc I can’t decide what music to listen to while I grade. I generally play what we’re talking about in class but we just finished punk/new wave and starting 70s country tomorrow.

I haven't found/looked for the merino wool community here, but I do feel like I've joined a cult now that I'm kinda all-in on woolx and wool& dresses. This is a post about the "secret" woolx mystery sale and yes, I've already made a purchase.

Couldn‘t get a Lyft after amazing Gillian Welch & David Rawlings w/Paul Kowert Grateful Dead Acoustic Reckoning show. Driver cancelled, 2nd driver delayed, cancelled. V annoyed but finally paired w/new driver & Jesus was on the way! Couldn’t be too mad anymore & had to laugh. Happy Easter, y’all

Emotionally preparing (won't be prepared) for all of the "the shot" talk re: Pitino playing Duke in the Sweet 16. I still hate Christian Laettner.

Haven't taken many photos except at the fantastic Virginia Museum of Fine Arts yesterday. However, I deeply regret not taking a photo of Michael Bishop, current lead singer of GWAR, holding up his performance mask (Blothar, I think?), at the beginning of his talk this morning #sam2026

Made wild decision to come to campus during spring break (!!) but theres a conference & keynote is David Yeager author of 10 to 25 the science of motivating young people. One of the best books I’ve read & changed how I think about students. Highly recommend. www.simonandschuster.com/books/10-to-...

The thing about overcommitting to wearing only clothes with pockets & keeping it up a decade plus (life is too short etc etc) is that when an exception is made for a fancy party you realize how very much putting hands in pockets has become part of your personality.

Read first Murderbot book on Sunday, then immediately read the second. Even tho this isn’t my typical genre I do love a novella & these are good. Super nice of Libby to give me book 3 yesterday (read) & for book 4 to pop up today (soon to be read).

Someone in the classroom next door banged on the wall when I started playing "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" during class today. I assume they were inspired by the message, so I probably should have turned it up louder... but I refrained (probably deserve a medal for such restraint).

I complain all the time about 11 a.m. central kickoffs, so I am obviously thrilled (tone: sarcastic) re: 10 a.m. central tip off for the UK basketball game. Safety first and all that, but I'll still be grumpy about it

Carved out time to discuss AI use with students on 1st day of class in all my classes but esp the 1st yrs. Was (mostly) really impressed with their takes & general self-awareness of how using it as a substitute for thinking is counter to getting an actual education vs using it as a tool/help/tutor.

Opting to have an existential crisis about an AI policy for my syllabus instead of completing the actual syllabus/course schedule for first day of classes tomorrow. This is fine 🫠

Tackled so many analog photos from way back in middle school up to iPhone era. Absolutely ruthless in what I threw out, but by the time I got to boxes w/ grad school stuff I had lost my resolve. I took those boxes to my office at school for now/ever. Cleaning out success, maybe?

Am being forced to deal w/boxes of old stuff this weekend. Past Nancy kept ALL papers/things ever but maybe we sent more cards/letters/notes back in the day? Either way, this floppy disk says a lot abt data storage in the 1990s. Initials are NPR & they're stickers. Crap.doc is insightful, I'm sure.
