Really great explanations in this piece from the University of Arizona about how our new lunar modeling raises some new, necessary questions about when the Moon formed relative to the age of the Solar System. Quotes from me and the fantastic @namyab.bsky.social: news.arizona.edu/news/soft-an...

Soft and stretchy or rock solid? New modeling study sheds light on how the Earth got its moon
Historically, computer simulations modeling collisions between protoplanetary bodies have treated them largely as fluids. A new study suggests taking into account the material strength of solid bodies...

Large craters offer clues to the origin of asteroid 16 Psyche
Even 200 years after asteroid 16 Psyche was discovered, astronomers continue to puzzle over its formation. Psyche is the 10th-most massive asteroid in the main belt between Mars and Jupiter, and the largest known metallic asteroid, at 140 miles in diameter.

Very excited for my mentee @namyab.bsky.social's first paper, out today!! We've been hard at work doing high-resolution impact simulations of asteroid (16) Psyche prior to the NASA mission's arrival in 2029: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/...
