Other examples: Heathcliff (Wuthering Heights) Edward Rochester (Jane Eyre) Edmond Dantès (The Count of Monte Cristo) Steerforth (David Copperfield) Elric of Melniboné (The Elric Saga) Lestat (The Vampire Chronicles) Adrian "Alucard" Tepes (Castlevania) Percival de Rolo (The Legend of Vox Machina)

A collage of comic panels featuring Namor in various scenes. He is depicted in action, raging, resigned, romantic, boastful, and expressing introspection. The panels convey themes of loneliness, strength, emotional conflict, heartache, and solitude. There is a quote from "Turbulent Sea" from 2008 by Christine Feehan: "Men like him didn't ever belong to anyone--and no one belonged to them. Worse, she was slowly stealing his heart. He could take the craving for her body. He could even live without his soul, but if he allowed her access to his heart, he would be lost."

The Byronic Hero was codified & popularized by the characters in Byron's works, including Childe Harold, Conrad the Corsair, Don Juan, & Lord Byron's own public persona. However, earlier examples include Shakespeare's Hamlet & Macbeth, Werther by Goethe, & the Gothic villains of Anne Radcliffe.

Comic collage with three dramatic scenes of Namor, one of him holding the dead Lady Dorma while shouting her name in anguish, one of him announcing his strength and declaring war on mankind, and the last of him in quiet melancholy standing before his father's grave. Included is a quote from Lord Byron's "The Corsair" (1814):
"He knew himself a villain—but he deem'd
The rest no better than the thing he seem'd;
And scorn'd the best as hypocrites who hid
Those deeds the bolder spirit plainly did.
He knew himself detested, but he knew
The hearts that loath'd him, crouch'd and dreaded too.
Lone, wild, and strange, he stood alike exempt
From all affection and from all contempt"

Byronic heroes are characterized by their brooding, charismatic, morally ambiguous nature, and are a subject of fascination and debate. Some find them alluring, others criticize their flaws and anti-social behaviors. Namor of course fits these criterion to a T.

Comic collage of Namor featuring scenes of rage, passion, and melancholy. Two quotes, the first from The Rebel (1951) by Albert Camus: "The Byronic hero, incapable of love, or capable only of an impossible love, suffers endlessly. He is solitary, languid, his condition exhausts him. If he wants to feel alive, it must be in the terrible exaltation of a brief and destructive action."
The second quote is from Lady Caroline Lamb from 1812 about Lord Byron himself: "Mad, bad, and dangerous to know."

#NamorWeek 2025 Day 7 Final Day: Creator's Choice Prince Namor, Archetypal Byronic Hero @namorweek.bsky.social

Collage of Prince Namor comic panels depicting him in various situations with intense expressions in a variety of emotional states. The text describes him as a Byronic hero, a variant of the romantic hero archetype named after the English romantic poet Lord Byron. A quote from Lord Macaulay from 1831 describes a Byronic hero as "a man proud, moody, cynical, with defiance on his brow, and misery in his heart, a scorner of his kind, implacable in revenge, yet capable of a deep and strong affection"

#NamorWeek 2025 Day 6 Romance Love is often complicated, and its whirling, swirling tides oft ensnare our mighty Submariner. However, the women in Namor's life are rarely passive shrinking violets, and often as not they know when to take matters into their own hands... @namorweek.bsky.social

A mock comic book cover titled "Love Romances-Women Take Hold of Namor!" features Namor engaged in romantic embraces with various women. Vibrant colors and dramatic poses convey passion and adventure, and in each instance the woman is grabbing onto or holding Namor. The women featured are Sandy Pierce, Lady Dorma, the White Queen Emma Frost, Betty Dean, Phoebe Marrs, Storm Ororo Munroe, the Enchantress Amora, the Squid Queen, the Valkyrie Brunnhilde, Marrina, Carrie Alexander, an unnamed sea captain, Abira, and Jaqueline Truffaut.

Continuing a story that began the previous issue, Namor takes on two Nazi u-boats single handed, sinking one and disabling the second. A rousing start as Namor fights the military of a WWII belligerent nation for the first time. It will, of course, be far from the last...

Namor Week Day 5 WAR In the Golden Age of Comics, characters fighting Nazis would become a dime a dozen. But that took time, and there had to be firsts. In Marvel Mystery Comics #4, we get the first cover of the Golden Age with a superhero punching Nazis, and its Namor! @namorweek.bsky.social

Comic book art from January/February 1940 depicts Namor fighting Nazis on a submarine named "Death Raider." To the right are comic panels from the issue's interior showing Namor's battle with two Nazi subs.
Caption: January 1940. Almost a year before Captain America first appears. Almost two years before Pearl Harbor. Namor first encounters World War II. Namor fights the Nazis. Final tally: Namor 2, Nazi subs 0. Imperios Rex!

Truly a case of the more things change, the more they stay the same, this Arthurian version of Namor retains his noble bearing, hot temper, and utter disdain for both shirts and pants. What's he got under that scant robe? Clearly naught but his Atlantean pride. Imperius Rex! BONUS: Lil' Sealord

Namor Week 2025 Day 4 Today for #Namorweek we swim through the currents of the multiverse to gaze upon the strange tides that wash across Alternate Earths. Leave familiar waters, see how they flow in different patterns, different forms, different fates. See Namor the Sealord @namorweek.bsky.social

collage of images from Avengers vol 3 #s 2+3 of Namor the Sealord from Earth-398, a version of Namor with long hair, a golden hoop earing on his right ear, holding a golden trident, and wearing a skimpy green and gold robe which reveals most of his body, belted in gold with a seashell at his hip. Text: "So much has changed...but I'm the same. Namor the Sealord. Earth-398 Morgan Conquest. Earth-398 diverged when the sorceress Morgan Le Fay used the Twilight Sword to warp the world into an Arthurian setting to suit her tastes. There, she was guarded by the Queen's Vengeance, an enthralled version of The Avengers. Among their number is Namor the Sealord."
Images include a face closeup, Namor hefting aloft his golden trident, Namor flyng through the air, Namor in combat striking Yeoman America's shield, and Namor among the other members of the Queen's Vengeance.

For @namorweek.bsky.social I couldn't make up my mind if this was Day 2: The Depths or Day 4: Alternate Universe, What If...? (In this case, what if Namor was a deep sea cryptid) what I ended up with was The Shape of Water meets aaahhhhdragged down to the depths, the dregs of the ocean #namorweek

digital illustration of Namor, as some kind of creature or cryptid, grinning with sharklike teeth and trailing a cloud of blood. like the bioluminescent angler fish and other manner and sealife of the deepest of sea trenche, he shimmers, eel-like. you should probably start fleeing now.

A underwater painting of Fen (namor's mother) looking lovingly down at her sleeping infant child. Baby Namor is sleeping in a giant seashell, vibrant undersea plants surround them. Based on the painting A Water Baby by Herbert James Draper. Fen wears her traditional Mayan clothing and jewelry, and has gills on the side of her neck, she floats gently in the water as she looks down at her baby. Namor sleeps on his side, with his arms across his chest, he has small pointed ears and ankle wings. The main colors in use are browns, blues, pinks and greens.
