I think Jev is incredible. It's a lightning rod for people who jump on bandwagons and pump out slop, so you can just go on arXiv or on ICLR's openreview page and look for Jev papers and just blacklist every author you see on there.

It's actually incredible how this is the single most facebook thing they could've possibly done and then they actually went and did it.

One of the main comorbidities I've noticed is the sheer number of very simple questions/basic help posts about EMNLP. It's fine to ask questions. I've been answering a bunch. But it shows just how many people submitted with minimal prior ACL/ARR experience on either their or their advisors' parts.
A list of 18 reddit posts posts under the result of searching for "EMNLP" in the r/LanguageTechnology subreddit.

My position paper "The Perceptual Gap: Why We Need Accessible XAI for Assistive Technologies" has been conditionally accepted as a Poster in CHI '26! (arXiv: arxiv.org/abs/2603.024...) tl;dr: Folks with sensory disabilities need XAI, but XAI for the models used in assistive tech aren't accessible.

Why on earth would you even do this in the first place? Pasting the details into ChatGPT, then asking it to generate the citation is a way bigger hassle than simply having Scholar + Zotero (or another bib manager) extensions set up correctly to grab metadata and generate citations.

It was great listening to Dr's Ishtiaque, Ferdous, and Sultana talk about their experiences! There's a *lot* of HCI work to be done in the scope of Bangladesh, and IMO not enough folks working on them, so HCCS should be a great addition. Looking forward to the work soon to come out of the lab.

lowkey I appreciate folks aren't posting linkedinisms like "In 2025 I achieved X, Y, Z" this time around. It's fine to celebrate your wins, but I imagine for most people, 2025 was... A Year. ...and I think that's all that needs to be said.

In the mid 2010s biology folks figured out how to do human gene editing. The community took one look, realized the consequences would be so dire for humanity, and put a hard stop to it. People like Jiankui He were excoriated for illegally editing embryos. Why wasn't this the case with GenAI?

How was no one talking about this?* IJCAI-ECAI 2026 @ijcai.org levying a $100 fee per submission unless every author on the paper is only on that one submitted paper. * rhetorical question. I assume the ICLR drama drowned it
Primary Paper Initiative: IJCAI-ECAI 2026 is launching the Primary Paper Initiative in response to the international AI research community’s call to address challenges and to revitalize the peer review process, while strengthening the reviewers and authors in the process. Under the IJCAI-ECAI 2026 Primary Paper Initiative, every submission is subject to a fee of USD 100. That paper submission fee is waived for primary papers, i.e., papers for which none of the authors appear as an author on any other submission to IJCAI-ECAI 2026. The initiative applies to the main track, Survey Track, and all special tracks, excluding the Journal Track, the Sister Conferences Track, Early Career Highlights, Competitions, Demos, and the Doctoral Consortium. All proceeds generated from the Primary Paper Initiative will be exclusively directed toward the support of the reviewing community of IJCAI-ECAI 2026. To recognize the reviewers’ contributions, the initiative introduces Peer Reviewer Recognition Policy with clearly defined standards (which will be published on the conference web site). The initiative aims to enhance review quality, strengthen accountability, and uphold the scientific excellence of the conference. Details and the FAQ will be published on the IJCAI-ECAI 2026 website.

Took me about 5 minutes to dig out the identity of the 40 questions reviewer — after someone posted it on the other site; I dunno how to search Xiaohongshu directly. Honestly, I don't think western academics are going to feel a fraction of the shitstorm that the Chinese ML community's probably in.

How much do instruction-tuning datasets (e.g. Alpaca, Dolly) resemble everyday LLM usage? It's a bit of a weirdly basic question, but I'm not up to date with instruction tuning. (I'm looking at model-agnostic single-turn Prompt-Response paired data, and ShareGPT is really messy and multi-turn)

Folks on ML socials these past few weeks.
The two-men-on-bus meme. The man on the left is staring at a depressing, dark wall, labelled "Submitted to AAAI". The man on the right is happily staring at a bright landscape, labelled "Went to COLM".

My dad's been watching instructional car videos and every other video he opens is utter slop. I'm in the room and it's SO obvious to me that a video with generated images/panning stock photos and a steady, droning narration in numbered list format is slop. Even he can tell But for how much longer?

Recommender systems have quite literally broken younger folks' ability to search. I'm not kidding you, the average user is utterly incapable of finding content without a recommender feeding them things. That's why forums died but reddit survived as a social platform, because forums don't use recsys.

the virgin "AGI existential risk" vs the Chad Global Warming

Under virgin AGI existential risk:
- programmer LARP fantasy that makes coding the single most important skill for saving humanity
- fake and made up
- entirely based on thought experiments
- Zero evidence
- assumes that there's this vaguely defined concept known as "intelligence" that can be linearly increased as if it were a mathematical quantity
-projects an anthropomorphic drive toward control and power onto algorithms that just do statistics to spit out words; colonialist self-report
- sponsored by billionaires who want to make their technology seem more important than it is
- blackmails you from the future using faulty logic; doesn't actually make any sense
- "oh no, i guess we have to build the Doom Machine now. i guess the course of technological progress is inevitable, oh well"

Under "the chad global warming"
- incomprehensibly complex and interconnected polycrisis
- verified by the entire scientific community
- resists ideological simplification
- will actually kill you
- doesn't even need intelligence to threaten humanity's survival
- divine retribution for fossil capital's greed and wanton exploitation of the natural world
- reveals deep-rooted flaws with the dominant politico-economic paradigm; demands a fundamental shift of human value systems by its sheer physical existence
- billionaires don't want you to think about it because it is too scary

All these citation managers and notetaking apps and somehow I managed to fall back on a word document with my references as <short note on where/why I'm citing this> <url> 😮‍💨 Zotero's great, but at this stage of writing, adding things as I find them seems to interrupt my stream of consciousness

Honestly Bsky is so lefty that when I see the occasional fascism supporter I have to do a double-take to make sure they're not doing A Bit. And it's kind of refreshing because it's what the internet used to be like 10-ish years ago.

Oliver Suchanek and @katta.bsky.social at #CHI2025. Refreshing to see a good deaf-hearing collaborator dynamic: both presenters signed, and interpreters did the voicing. So much more respectful than the typical scenario of the deaf presenter signing and the hearing presenter talking up a storm.
Two people presenting on opposite ends of a podium. On the left, the deaf presenter (Oliver) looks on while their hearing collaborator (Katta) is signing on the right.

I hate to say it but it needs to be said. The "center of AI discourse" no longer exists. r/MachineLearning had solid discourse killed by the API boycott. AI Twitter got swamped by grifters and then killed by algorithm changes and fascist takeovers. On Bsky it was obviously stifled in the cradle.

I think it's noteworthy how spoiled we in ML/NLP/CV are for venues. Miss a deadline or get rejected? The next deadline for a relevant venue of equal prestige is just a month or two away! (and this is honestly contributing a lot to the over abundance of papers in the field)

Has anyone been doing or planning to do any qualitative tests on GPT-4.5? Early vibes I've been hearing say it's better on benchmarks (obviously) but apparently Karparthy did a vibes test and 4.5 failed spectacularly despite OpenAI claiming that this is the kind of task it should do better at.
A screenshot showing two prompts between GPT 4 and 4.5 asking GPT 4.5 to playfully roast GPT-4 for its inferior capabilities. People say the left option was better 32% of the time and the right option 25.2% of the time, and the remainder opted to skip.In five questions asked to GPT4 and GPT4.5, people preferred 4 4/5 of the time.
