In the UK we're not far off having a generation who are still paying their own student finance, whilst also becoming liable for some of their children's costs...

It's not that Farage was racist 50 years ago, it's that he is clearly lying about his past patterns of behaviours. It wasn't a one off that was forgettable for him but memorable for the victim, it was a regular occurrence. He simply isn't credible & this Trumpian attempt to brush it off won't work.

EVEN IF they address the two child cap at the next budget that was a DAY ONE priority for me. Same with changing the ideological tune on asylum, immigration, and trans-rights. They've had their chances, they've squandered them and will never get my vote. Green possibly Lib Dem for me now.

100% never voting for Labour so long as the current crop of MPs form it's ideological core. I am pro immigrants and asylum seekers being able to settle here without burdensome financial and legal hurdles. I'm anti-child poverty, and pro-trans rights. Fuck Labour.

AI is great for helping capture, organise and sometimes edit thoughts, I use it ALL THE TIME for this type of activity. Sometimes it can make helpful suggestions for key literature FOR ME TO READ but the original thoughts are always mine and I am driving the direction.

Listening to Rachel Reeves reminds me why The Greens are actually doing so well. There's no sense of hope in anything she says... It feels more like desperation from someone who knows they've made a monumentally strategic error by over promising and under-delivering www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Could Rachel Reeves break a 50-year taboo by raising income tax in her Budget?
It is more than half a century since a chancellor chose to put up the basic rate of income tax.

I can't remember the article, but someone did actually do some research calculating the cost/benefit of writing grant applications, and concluded that for most arts and humanities work it made sense to just equitably distribute money. It was only useful for things involving big machines/buildings.

That's fine if you're in a position where you have a secure/permanent job and/ot a manager who understands the calculus for all this. Not everyone has both of those.

It's actually quite useful to know that you have a sub 10% chance of getting a grant with some ESRC/AHRC... It's not about you, we are all broadly capable of writing "good" grants, it's just the system is so highly competitive it's very hard to get them first time round.

Jenrick now saying he would "probably ban the burka" is absolutely ridiculous. Every woman I have spoken to who wears one does so ENTIRELY out of her own volition - and for the record they've all been far more socially liberal than Jenrick. We should not be policing the styles of people's clothing.

The direct costs (aid, military equipment) of the Ukraine war to the UK are roughly the same as the £20bn black hole the Reeves is now trying to plug... In-direct costs are even higher. War is making us a vastly poorer country.

Has anyone in @ucu.org.uk thought about arguing for a reduction in working hours to revalue our labour? The productivity gains offered by AI are significant and growing... If we don't attempt to grasp those benefits for workers soon, the tools will slip into the hands of managers to intensify work.

UN estimates 80% of buildings destroyed or damaged in Gaza, an absolutely abhorrent level of destruction, especially when it is one of the most densely populated areas of the world. There is no excuse for this sort of widely targeted destruction. I can only hope people find a way out of this cycle.

I'm a fan of Polanski but I don't think dredging that far back is useful. We could level far bigger criticisms at Merkel for her regular meetings with Putin - yes she misjudged it, but at the time it appeared reasonable. I'd suggest the same could be said for those who used to appear on Russia Today

How are people feeling about the upcoming ballot for strike action by @ucu.org.uk? I'm minded to vote yes, but I remain highly concerned we don't have a leadership who know how to actually use a strike mandate. That being said, voting no suggests I accept that pay offer, which I don't.

I fully agree solidarity to bring about reparations need not be motivated by guilt - understanding the destruction of economies, individual lives, families, cultures would be a good start to developing compassion. From that can grow conversations about righting wrongs.
