I love accidental photos that show a different unexpected perspective
An accidental photo taken in a vehicle. It is from the driver’s seat, left side, just below the steering wheel. It shows the steering wheel, air vent, a bit of the driver’s side window, and the windshield. Outside the windows is a blue sky scattered with clouds.

The carpark at this DMV office is byzantine. I appreciate their absolute commitment to keeping the DMV’s reputation intact.

At the store, a kid and their adult are having a vigorous debate about whether a toy that farts is a good birthday gift for a friend. I am slow walking to hear who wins.

“Religious and inspirational fiction” 😂
A screenshot of ebooksdaily. The header reads “Religious & Insprational Fiction”. There are four book covers underneath: Tony Hillerman “Listening Woman”, Christopher Moore “Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal”, John Irving “A Prayer for Owen Meany”, and Elizabeth Strout “The Things We Never Say”. And thus proves the value of a good librarian who is capable of categorization.

She asked me to stay after school the next day. She handed me a Bible and said to start reading, or I would never pass the AP test. I read the entire thing cover to cover over the Thanksgiving break. It was a hell of a self education. 2/fin

A couple of months into AP English, my exasperated teacher pulled me aside to ask why I wasn’t getting any of the religious references in the assigned reading. I told her that I had never been exposed to the Bible. 1/

My mom taught me how to touchtype in 4th grade by sitting me down in front of an old IBM Selectric and draping a dishcloth over my hands. I could type 180wpm by the time I hit high school. I got some great jobs taking dictation and doing data entry before I got my first tech job.

Total call time: 47 minutes. Total MOH time: at least 44 minutes. And thus I have been punished today.

[1] Menu routing: Press 1 to be put on hold and tormented with shitty music until you die, press 2 to talk to an agent who could not give even one single fuck about you, press 3 to listen to information that you already know because you’re not an idiot, &c &c &c. 8/

I have been on hold with one of my dad’s previous financial institutions for the past 15 minutes and counting. I have been listening to #3 (the absolute worst of the 3) of that MOH. Not only are those ancient VAXen still in use, and my code still in prod, but that music is now tormenting me. 6/

Nadyne Richmond @nadyne.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
I have hoped that it has meant that those ancient VAXen have finally been retired to that great server room in the sky. In reality, it might simply be because who the fuck makes phone calls unless they absolutely have to. Certainly not me. 5/

In the years thereafter, I have occasionally heard that cursed music. Which means that some of the code that I wrote in either Pascal or C or (fairies help us all) VAX assembler is still in production. My encounters with the music have decreased over the years. 4/

I left the startup in 2000. I didn’t follow them after that. I think they ceased operations in 2005ish. But, somewhere in the deep dark server rooms of what is now Verizon, the ancient VAXen that our software ran on and those music files from hell reside on live on. 3/

Our MOH was this anodyne uncopyrighted instrumental dreck that repeated every 30-45s. We had 3 unbearable musical options for it. It has now been well over 20 years since I had that job, but I can still hum all 3 of them. This music is burned into my brain in ways that cannot be undone. 2/

When I was in uni getting my first undergrad, I worked for a local telecom startup that did menu routing [1]. One of my jobs as the most junior member of the staff was to call and test our music on hold every single day. I had to do this across 8 nodes, primary and backup, for 3 years. 1/n

Your intrepid girl reporter is all wind blown. She is standing on the Gordie Howe Bridge, below the sign marking the international boundary. It’s a beautiful sunny day. In the distance, you can see downtown Detroitt.

After the service, the funeral home gave me a nice reusable bag with paperwork and thank you cards and so on. I don’t feel like I can go to my local farmers’ market with a bag advertising a funeral home.

I think we’re far more likely to get a patch through on the short term than a better long term solution. I don’t want to write off everyone between now and the long term solution.

Can you say more about how subsidizing daycare isn’t addressing how our economy is failing folks? I agree with you that our economy has lots of issues. I think that subsidizing daycare is only one of the ways that would go a long way towards addressing the structural issues.

What is the problem with subsidizing daycare? Why expect adults (which, in practice, means mostly women) to give up their prime working years?

Squirrel vs bird feeder, with a bunny observing
A bird feeder is hung from a shepherd’s hook. A squirrel has its nose and front paws on the edge of the feeder. One back paw clutches the hook, while the other waves in the air. In the background, a bunny watches the acrobatics.

Some time ago, I was test driving a manual transmission convertible. I had just gotten onto the freeway and flawlessly shifted to sixth. The salesman looked over at me and said “you know, it’s easier for a woman to drive an automatic”. He must have hated money too.

Oh, yes. Yes way.
This is a screenshot of a pop-up ad on a funeral home's webpage. At the top is a picture of several people seated in white chairs in an outdoor setting. A person wearing a suit is handing someone in the front row a red rose. The text underneath reads:

Let’s make it triplets! I’ve got another cat from his litter:
A small tabby cat named Sauvi is curled up on a fluffy white blanket. She had a paw over her face while she slept. Then the photographer made noise and woke her up just as this picture was snapped. Her head is starting to lift from her paw.

Not pictured: a lot of snoring
A tabby cat named Cabi is curled up in a tiny ball. His paw is covering his eyes and nose. His tail is tucked around his paw. He is sleeping on a red and rainbow grandmother-crocheted blanket.

I have added the hood up to my tableau of a great Friday drive home
Our heroine is back in her car with a foot on the dash, this time with the hood of her beloved blue car visible in the background. There’s also a couple of trees and a perfectly blue sky with nary a cloud in sight.

This seems suboptimal
An absolutely shredded belt lies on the ground next to our heroine’s raspberry Chucks

While driving home from the city, I heard a thunk and then a knocking. A few min later, a red light came on for the battery. Then my power steering gave out. Then I got a red light warning about the engine heat. And now I’m sitting on the side of the road waiting to be rescued.
Our heroine is sitting in her car with the windows open and her feet up on the door frame. You can see her raspberry Chucks and black pants, plus a bit of her traitorous steering wheel and dash. At least she’s in the shade.
