Green gold from the garden - Gaz Oakley's "Super Green Gazpacho" from his Vegan 💯 cookbook! This is a great way to use extra cucumbers, or one that was hidden!
Pitcher with Super Green Gazpacho, in front of a gold hassock/ stool

This simple summer soup is so good!!
My friend Nikki shares fresh greens and veggies from her Organic Garden, and when that includes cucumbers, i make Garden gazpacho, inspired by chef Gaz Oakley - Vegan 💯

4 handfuls of greens (kale, chard, Amaranth, dandelion, purslane, mallow and other wild edible greens)
A cucumber, copied
A few sprigs. Handful of fresh mint, parsley, basil, (& chervil, salad Burnett, dill, lemon verbena... any herbs you love and appeal!)
Onion greens, chives, garlic chives
Garlic, chives
Green pepper or 1/2 green chilli, deseeded
1/2- 1 over-ripe avocado (peeled and w/o the pit)

3-5 TBSP coconut yogurt
2 TBSP love oil
1-2 TBSP cider or wine vinegar
1 TBSP lemon juice

Blend in stages, adding ~ 4 Cups water as you go, until it's smooth, adding a pinch of salt and pepper at the end (after you've decanted into your container, taste and add more as needed)

I sauté the kale before blending, and loose chop the other greens.

Gaz tops with rose petal ice cubes (3-4 petals in each cube - yes! Rose petals are edible! Like everything else - is ideal if they are organically grown!)

Other toppings: cherry tomatoes, fresh peas or beans, thin slice of cucumber, artichoke hearts, garnish of watercress, arugula or parsley.

I like to add a tsp of miso and some kelp to my bowl, sprinkle with Chili Lime seasoning, and add veggies from the garden - today i sautéed a few beans and several green tomato slices

Check Gaz' YouTube channel for other recipes, and making an 'artichoke rose'

I added Amaranth along with the other greens in my gazpacho

Excited to see my Babington perennial leeks blooming! The little topset bubils can be planted around the garden, and next year I'll have a nice ᏄᏫᏒᎾ nu-wi-sv-na / patch!

I've had them since 2013, and brought several with me when I moved from the house on Galloway in 2022. Making a batch of FPJ (fermented plant juice) from my Comfrey and borage this morning. FPJ is a less stinky way of using your Comfrey to make a potent garden ammendment! Diluted ~ 1/500, it can be used as a foliage feed to enhance plant health.
Comfrey and borage mixed with = measure by weight of brown sugar, with green leaves of the Comfrey plant in Rose Cottage Garden

"Fermented Plant Juice (or FPJ in short) is a method developed from Korean Natural Farming, to help get better yields using local and 100% natural materials.

"The whole goal in Korean Natural Farming is to use local resources to make mineral and biological amendments that not only improve results in the garden, but are kind to nature and helps close the waste gap in our modern culture."
-Welsh gardener Huw Richards -

Description for his YouTube video on 'Using Nettles for Healthier Plants and Soil

Nettles, mugwort, or nasturtium are other options for FPJ.

Plant matter is gathered in early morning, broken up (twist by hand or chopped) mixed with an equal weight of sugar, packed into a jar, pressed down and weighted with a rock that's been boiled and allowed to kool.
Labled with date and variety (painters tape!).

The jar is stored at room temperature in a dark place for about a week, then strained into a smaller jar for use.

For use as a foliar spray, it's diluted ~ 1 part to 500 (spoonful in a gallon) and sprayed on leaves

Growing Out The Box and Rogue Regenerative Agriculture also have tutorials on making and using on their channels

The spent leaves can be added to the compost

ᎤᎵᎮᎵᏍᏗ ᎤᎾᏙᏓᏆᏍᎬ U-li-he-lis-di u-na-do-da-quas-gv / happy Sunday So enjoyed participating in the @linfielduniv.bsky.social camas festival on Friday - I am cold stratifying seed from the camas patch, imagining the sea of purple this yard once was ᎳᎧᎹᏍ (la-ka-ma-s/ sound alike

For generations, purple camas lilies have been cultivated, traded and consumed by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest including the Kalapuya, who were removed to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in 1855. Though much sparser now than in the days it turned the Willamette Valley purple each spring, it remains a central piece of Kalapuyan lifeways.

The Camas Festival began when Linfield University’s environmental studies students cleared invasive Himalayan blackberry in efforts to restore the Cozine Creek Natural Area on campus.
The next spring, a dormant patch of camas grew, a native flower and Indigenous First Food.
Linfield campus is sited on the traditional territories of the “Yam Hill” band of the Kalapuya people in McMinnville.

A partnership between Linfield and the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde, the annual Camas festival coincides with the spring bloom and celebrates the cultural, ecological and artistic significance of the camas flower.

A starchy bulb, camas is traditionally pit roasted for 3-5 days, which converts the inulin to more easily digested components. For the festival, camas was prepared in a slow cooker, and samples were available after a talk on relationship, identification, culture and preparation.

Camas was a common trade item, and is a symbol of a reciprocal relationship - annual harvests and burns increase camas distribution and health... our West coast tribes had a strong trade economy, and different family groups had patched they traditionally tended and harvested

Greg Archuleta is a member of and the Cultural Policy Analyst for the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde. His families are Willamette Tumwater, Clackamas, Santiam Kalapuya and Shasta/Takelma.

YAY! 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 🌱 My Wasabi starts arrived from the coast, Since night temperatures are still iffy, I tucked pots in the unheated greenhouse. I'm excited to grow true Wasabi - Eutrema japonicum! #oregoncoastwasabi #growwasabiinyourbackyard #perennialgarden #edimentals #eutremajaponicum
Wasabi - Eutrema japonicum- in its pot in the greenhouse, while it aclimates to its new home

All parts of Wasabi are edible, which allows for some tasting before the rhizomes mature! 😊 🪴

I appreciate happening upon the channel 12 interview with Clint Taylor from OSU extension service, highlighting his work with the Wasabi farmers in Tillamook!

Ooo - Oregon Wasabi? I ordered the same day!

For those curious about growing conditions - yes!
In Japan, Wasabi is traditionally grown on the banks of cool, clear streams!!

In home gardens in the Willamette Valley, they do well in large pots with a 50/50 mix of growing medium (potting soil, coconut coir) and perlite or gravel!

They like regular watering - but not standing water! They need air (hence the perlite or gravel in the Growing medium!)

A spot that's shady, and 40-70° F is their happy place!

Growing in a pot makes it easy to keep them in a shady spot, or bring them inside when temperatures drop.

Have you tasted or grown real Wasabi?

Oregon Coast Wasabi ships nationwide, and you can use the code SPRING10 for the 10% discount - which covered the postage!!
Wasabi starts - Eutrema japonicum
They come as bareroot starts, in a 50/50 mix of coconut coir or potting mix and perlite, vehicle or small round gravel, ready to be planted out!

A perennial which doesn't go dormant, Wasabi has been broken in Japan over 10,000 years!

All parts of the plant are tasty and edible, new starts can be taken from around the Central rhizome when you're ready to harvest (~ 18 -24 months. 2 Pink pots and 3 dark green, with potting mix and Wasabi starts. Oregon coast Wasabi planting guide on top of the pots in front

Eutrema japonicum

The pots are in the greenhouse, while plants aclimate to our elevation and climate.

Potting mdium is the recommended 50/50 mix of potting soil or coconut coir and gravel! I'm excited to watch them grow!

Green leaves of Feverfew - Tanacetum parthenium / very effective for migraine relief, easing anxiety, pain reduction, and prompting heart health

Winter savory in a Clay pot - Satureja montana / this cold hardy perennial herb a tasty trooper, traditionally used to flavor beams, and make them more easily digested - also great for fish, kale and other cabbage crops, and even salads! The parent plant, over 10 years old - is in a pot just outside my front door which makes it easy to harvest fresh in any season. I have lemon savory in my back garden.

Green onions

Yomogi (Artemisia princeps) is the Asian mugwort used by LAc for moxa. This bitter herb has many health benefits, (heart health, skin issues, immune benefits) and is used fresh or dried.
My start came from an herbalist friend, who was given a bag of roots by a Japanese woman, plus a little list of uses!

Making a batch of Rose petal jam 🌹 I used dried rose petals, added a handful of rose geranium leaves from the greenhouse ... (and yes, they are grown organically, & both rose petals and scented geranium are delightfully edible)! #quenchbook #rosepetaljam #driedroses #therose
Blue bowl with rose petals and sugar

Making a batch of Rose petal jam

🌹 emptied my tin of dried roses which I generally use for making rose beads....
I added a handful of rose geranium leaves from the greenhouse ... (and yes, they are grown organically, & both rose petals and scented geranium are delightfully edible)!

🌹 ground some dried Jackfruit for part of the sweetening, and will use organic sugar and a bit of honey for the balance.

🌹 weighed the dried petals before and after rinsing and then pouring boiling water over them, & let steep for 5 minutes; then strained, and added about a Tbsp of fresh lemon juice.

Similar to making rose beads, a YouTube video suggested something, then resting for several hours, and simmering again!

Rose petals contain a good among of pectin, which is wonderful for hydration! 🌹

In their book on optimal hydration 'Quench,' Dana Cohen and Gina Bria wrote, "ancient Persian doctors used rose petal jam especially for the elderly, slipping it under their tongues to release both the high-pectin hydration and the medical effects locked within, in the gentlest possible release. Rose jelly was especially noted to heal mucous membranes, which line our digestive tracts." ( p 142)

A healer from Belize recommended using a bit of powered rose petals to staunch a nose bleed - I've used it for years, and it works beautifully!

I wonder if a forgotten use of rose petal beads was a way to store the 'petal power' so they could be rehydrated for medicinal use? ... drying and making pastilles or pellets is used with other herbs ...

I'm excited to add rose petal jam to my 'Quench' Apothecary, and to try it in my 'Afternoon Delight' along with elderberry syrup i made last fall.

I look forward to our roses blooming.

Spiral of SoulCollage®️ cards on the floor in dappled sunlight

I've created over 40 cards the last couple of years, several over the last month, in our facilitator training.

The SoulCollage® process was created by Seena Frost.
Images are select and cut out, then glued onto a piece of cardstock or matboard. Most common backing sizes are 5x7" or 5x8"
They are intended for personal use, so choose a size that feels good to you!

Over time, folks create their own personal decks of collaged cards. Each card represents its own unique voice,

Hint - because images and words light up diffent areas of the brain, we generally don't include words on our cards! You might want to have a small box or envelope for intriguing words, and save those for other projects.

With this deck of cards, you can give image to the many parts of yourself, including parts that feel like allies, and parts that challenge you.
It's a process (not product) oriented, with each person creating and interpreting their own cards.
If someone shares theirs, we refrain from 'compliments' - perhaps speaking of feelings evoked, or resonance with or own cards, if it seems appropriate!

It's a wonderful, cooperative community, and there are over 6500 facilitators, worldwide! Transpersonal and Word of 2026 SoulCollage®️ cards WOU candle, at the center of my graduation spiral!

Holiday baking I love local pasture raised lamb (and wool) from Bide a Wee, and just baked a shank in my glass bowled Air Fryer - mmm! I used veggie stock (freeze OG trimmings - carrot and celery tips, onion and garlic skins, etc) and simmered those during the first 20 minute bake. 1/2

I began making Natto around 18 months ago, having discovered it's popularity among folks of all ages in Japan, and health benefits! The enzyme Nattokinase benefits heart health by enhancing blood flow, breaks up clots and reduce migraines / helps prevent dementia!
