Movements that rely on virality are necessarily decentralized and give up their ability to monitor and regulate the message in exchange for reach. Occupy Wall Street was an early example of this where the behavior of individuals at encampments and on twitter gave opponents fodder to dismiss it all

I think a major issue of advocacy in the social media era is that movements don't get to pick their spokespeople, their opponents do. People can cherry pick which of the vocal advocates for a cause they want to highlight as absurd or objectionable and use them to discredit the movement as a whole.

I wrote my college thesis on how we used humor after 9/11 and specifically focused on this issue of the Onion. I think it's a truly perfect piece of media and deserves all of the accolades it has received over the years.

The point of this tactic is to get THEM to say something and go on the record. The Scott Wiener videos are all about centering the positions of the people behind the camera not in front of it. That's not effective advocacy IMO.

I generally think bird-dogging *can* be a really effective tool. I do think, however, its efficacy has been dampened by the proliferation of constant, semi-viral social media clips. And this trend of just yelling at an elected official with a phone in their face isn't particularly persuasive.

This is the kind of thing I was talking about in the edge case piece. The specifics make me believe this is well on the antisemitic side of the edge. But no matter how you define it, it's clear this is just an awful, unhelpful, and ultimately counter productive approach.

Progress requires friction. Insurgent primary campaigns built to shake up the system are a sign of a healthy party that is challenging held assumptions in order to grow. But also from a messaging standpoint, who is this for? I struggle to understand who this is meant to convince.
