We wrote one of the definitions of antisemitism listed in @mayor.nyc.gov's Strategy to Combat Antisemitism. We're glad our definition (or any definition, for that matter) is not being codified into law. This piece by @emilyctamkin.bsky.social sums up why.

Mayor Mamdani's antisemitism strategy doesn’t define antisemitism. That’s a good thing.
Contrary to some critics' beliefs, we don't need a definition to fight hatred

I think a major issue of advocacy in the social media era is that movements don't get to pick their spokespeople, their opponents do. People can cherry pick which of the vocal advocates for a cause they want to highlight as absurd or objectionable and use them to discredit the movement as a whole.

THREAD 🧵 This week, Elon Musk's America PAC launched hundreds of anti-trans ads, part of a $100 million midterm spend. In 2024, a Musk-funded PAC ran antisemitic ads reminding Muslim voters that Doug Emhoff is Jewish. That's not a coincidence.

I see Flock cameras all over DC, and the message they send is never "this place is now safe." It's "here's a where MPD has been exposed as innefective." My neighbors are now under constant surveillance because MPD ignored citizen reports of a gun selling ring which resulted in a massive shootout.

Brooklyn Vegan was, without question, the most important news source in the world to me. They treated bands playing for 50 people like they were arena-filling rock stars. They talked about albums like they were cherished members of their own family. Private equity is destroying the world.

The most interesting response I keep seeing to this piece is "you can't cooperate with someone who refuses to find middle ground with you." But so many of the people saying that are those that refuse to find middle ground with him. Which is the entire point of the piece.

A fittingly powerful final chapter of Arno's excellent tenure at the Forward. I, like many Jews, am sick of our identity and safety grabbing daily headlines. But retreat and isolation won't solve it. It takes thoughtful, targeted pushback. And it's why I'm proud to work at @nexusproject.bsky.social.

This is the kind of thing I was talking about in the edge case piece. The specifics make me believe this is well on the antisemitic side of the edge. But no matter how you define it, it's clear this is just an awful, unhelpful, and ultimately counter productive approach.

On coffee shops and edge cases. The false binary of "is it or is it not antisemitic" is convenient but usually unhelpful. Sometimes something isn't explicitly antisemitic but is still harmful. This is one of those times

Progress requires friction. Insurgent primary campaigns built to shake up the system are a sign of a healthy party that is challenging held assumptions in order to grow. But also from a messaging standpoint, who is this for? I struggle to understand who this is meant to convince.

Welcome back to Antisemitic Myths 101 📝 This week, we’re unpacking the claim that the assassination of Charlie Kirk was secretly orchestrated by Israel, because Kirk had supposedly grown critical of it. Read the full series here: nexusproject.us/nexus-resour...
Text-based image with a photo of Charlie Kirk and Benjamin Netanyahu says "Antisemitic Myths 101: 'Israel Killed Charlie Kirk.' In this series, we’re unpacking some of the most common antisemitic conspiracy theories, how they’re used as recruiting tools, and how quickly they fall apart." A tweet by Jackson Hinkle says "Israel killed Charlie Kirk."Text-based graphic says "The claim: that the September 2025 assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk was secretly orchestrated by Israel, because Kirk had supposedly grown critical of it.

This is a new turn on an old reflex: when a prominent figure dies suddenly, go looking for the Jew behind it. Far-right conspiracy theorists immediately wasted no time after Kirk’s death to start pointing fingers at Jews."Text-based graphic says "The same was done with President Kennedy’s killing and with sudden deaths long before his. In Kirk’s case it spread through influencers who cast doubt on the official account and pointed, without evidence, toward Israel."

There are a few really frustrating narratives about the Israel Day Parade in NYC. 1) Conflating support for Jews with support for Israel is wrong. Full stop. Saying a lack of participation in a parade for Israel is akin to a lack of support for Jews is its own variation of the dual loyalty trope.
