this is one of my favorite reviews on all of letterboxd

review of Rabbit's Kin (1952, dir. Robert McKimson, starring Bugs Bunny) by Brandon Reese

Pete Puma is the most fucked up guy in all of Looney Tunes. I do not say this lightly. He’s so stupid that the comedy takes on an avant-garde hue. Bugs should not be doing this. People should be stepping in. His voice seems to be from no region on earth. You do not recognize Pete Puma because he resembles nothing, nobody. It’s sometimes important to step back and remember who these shorts were made by and who they were made for. They were made by bitter, sweaty cartoon men of the 30s, 40s, and 50s and they were made for shell shocked GIs. Only in this context does Pete Puma make any sort of sense. The gateway drug of Elmer Fudd had begun to wear off and our boys, jaded by the horrors of war, needed an even dumber fix. This almost feels private. A conversation to which we should not bear witness. We had no business there.

I was cleaning up my desks and I found my old high school art homework. Lol. Maybe I'll redraw as a way to show that I improved in art

Downloaded Davinci Resolve but don't expect me to hear my voice if I'm ever going to make a video, now that I have braces. I don't know how long I'll wear them but it's probably when I have surgery this year to remove my extra tooth.

Make art. Make good art. Make “bad” art. Make mistakes. Make a huge godawful mess. Make something as beautiful & beyond your wildest dreams as you can, no matter how many times you need to do it. It doesn’t matter what you make. The most important and beautiful thing is that it all starts with you.

My advice to young artists is that ESPECIALLY as a young artist you have so much to learn about yourself and the world and what you like about the process and what your favourite things are, and if you do a little bit of everything you will figure out what you love more than anything else

My 12-year-old arse also thought that I had a chance to attend CalArts, SVA, and other prestigious animation schools😭. Mainly, I wanted to go to SVA back in middle school, because I also wanted to go to NYC, until I found out that it's so costly that even financial aid won't cover me.

Yknow maybe I'd get the "all art is political" crowd more if they actually LIKED and APPRECIATED art as is and used said argument to understand it better AS art rather than just as a way to satisfy and vindicate their own narcissistic and materialistic ideals and ego.

Page Miss Glory really makes me wish we had a boon of aggressively Art Deco inspired cartoons in the '30s, a la how the UPA influence was imbued in so many cartoons from the '50s onward. Stunning

Doing reappraisal for the 1993 movie just because of a generic Illumination movie is loser behavior. At least, pick the 1986 movie where it was directed by Chirin's Bell director, or read the Japanese comics.

I recently realized the reason I stopped drawing is because I was drawing tutorials rather than things I actually like. If I draw on things that I like daily, my art could've improve by now.

1. The Toy Story trilogy 2. The Incredibles 3. Finding Nemo (childhood favorite of mine and it made me interested in marine life) 4. Coco (I know the art direction is generic and there's discourse surrounding the messages and themes but I still love it. It does help that I like visiting Mexico)

Trace the art that you like. I'm not trolling. And then observe, study, and draw on your own. Never use "how to draw" tutorials
