For folks considering grad school in ML, my advice is to explore programs that mix ML with a domain interest. ML programs are wildly oversubscribed while a lot of the fun right now is in figuring out what you can do with it

🚨 New paper alert 🚨 Using LLMs as data annotators, you can produce any scientific result you want. We call this **LLM Hacking**. Paper: arxiv.org/pdf/2509.08825
We present our new preprint titled "Large Language Model Hacking: Quantifying the Hidden Risks of Using LLMs for Text Annotation".
We quantify LLM hacking risk through systematic replication of 37 diverse computational social science annotation tasks.
For these tasks, we use a combined set of 2,361 realistic hypotheses that researchers might test using these annotations.
Then, we collect 13 million LLM annotations across plausible LLM configurations.
These annotations feed into 1.4 million regressions testing the hypotheses.
For a hypothesis with no true effect (ground truth $p > 0.05$), different LLM configurations yield conflicting conclusions.
Checkmarks indicate correct statistical conclusions matching ground truth; crosses indicate LLM hacking -- incorrect conclusions due to annotation errors.
Across all experiments, LLM hacking occurs in 31-50\% of cases even with highly capable models.
Since minor configuration changes can flip scientific conclusions, from correct to incorrect, LLM hacking can be exploited to present anything as statistically significant.

Its the final countdown 🎶🎤 (I am re-reading my dissertation for my defense next week), and actually I realized I had some fun findings hidden in some papers that I myself forgot about! 😂 I don’t know if that’s a good or bad sign for my defense.. 😂

Realization: I really, really, really hate the part of my job where it is managing conda environments and going through a deep deep cave of issue reports trying to find why something randomly doesn’t work.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

I’m finally making myself at home here now I’ve left Twitter (or what was left of it). “Making myself at home” includes: finally following a lot of people for a lively timeline, and adding BlueSky to my website! 😁

I have (finally?) deactivated my account on X. It was slowly but surely really becoming unworkable, and the app was more and more connected with the falling of democratic values and freedom of information in the world.

I'm not American nor an expert on U.S. politics, but looking in from the outside it seems like a speedrun to an autocratic regime, without independent laws and even press or truth, and as a European I am **baffled** that there are no massive protests or strikes?!?

Wikipedia is rolling out anonymity features piloted in countries with authoritarian governments in the US & is making a change to not show editor IP addresses in response to a global "increase in threats" from Elon Musk, Heritage Foundation, and governments www.404media.co/wikipedia-pr...

The Wikimedia Foundation says it will likely roll out features previously used to protect editors in authoritarian countries more widely.

People often complain on social media, but I got locked out of my @zotero.org account because I no longer had access to my uni email, and their service in getting me access again was really *excellent*, and fast, and personal. 🙏✨👌

It’s really an upgrade that the Apple keyboard now allows one autocorrect keyboard with two languages, but the problem is that I write in three. 😂 I switch between English, Dutch, and Spanish, so still keyboard switching. 😛😅 Oddly specific problem.

Hi #nlp #nlproc 🦋, I an AE for an ARR paper with 0 reviews so far, please let me know if you can help with an emergency review in the next 48hours. Themes: cultural bias/multilinguality/LLMs. Thank you!

New year, new job, new laptop in #NLProc means: newly installing tensorflow and dependencies and solving conflicts in conda environments. 😅 Now for the first time with an Apple M1 chip, so extra ✨fun✨ 😛.

My resolution for the new year is going to be: not overworking and also planning breaks. ✨😌 During my PhD I tended to want to do “more”, but this wasn’t always “better”. This means I’ll be saying “no” more. Oh, and I want to improve my Spanish to B1/B2. 😁 Happy holidays! 🎄

I almost regret teaching my 90-year old grandma how the final weeks of a PhD work bc I just called her to thank her for sending us Christmas snacks, and she kept asking “shouldn’t you be writing? When are you done?” 😂

Hot take: Working another weekend this semester, I am left wondering: Why does the #NLProc publication process have so much artificial urgency baked into it? Requiring responses within 24h, emergency reviewers, everything urgent. Like, why? Slow science can also be a community goal.

📢 Ultimate test of #NLP bluesky: I need emergency reviewers for NAACL submissions on encoders (one multilingual, one for sentence embeddings). Help a desperate editor abandoned by the ACs! Author response starts tomorrow, so that's a true emergency. If you're my hero, lmk your openreview profile.

Nice to see we’re in #NLProc finally all moving somewhere else! 😁 At the start of my PhD, online connection to other researchers was super valuable. I really hope this remains accessible to PhDs currently starting, whether here or somewhere else!

What is it with companies that rejected you for PhD internships but keep emailing you, either with a “become a customer” message or a “rate our recruitment/career service” one? I sincerely doubt this is the best recruitment pool for either message, but maybe I’m wrong? 🤔
