Hot take: Working another weekend this semester, I am left wondering: Why does the #NLProc publication process have so much artificial urgency baked into it? Requiring responses within 24h, emergency reviewers, everything urgent. Like, why? Slow science can also be a community goal.

When you work backward from the conference date, and try to get submission to be /after/ the last major event's decision notification, and be realistic about giving people time to do things, the timeline tends to end up tight (with our ~three-per-year cycle). Failure to do this is unfair to students

I’m grateful that you all slog through that process (so I can read an abstract, grab a dataset and try a concept). But there simply must be a less painful method of peer review. As an outsider it hurts to watch you all go through it… I can’t imagine how spicy the academic group chat is.

the ARR author-reviewer discussion is too much rushed & seemingly high-stakes work for all parties. old fixed 3 turn sys was easier to manage: 1. reviews 2. author response 3. reviewers/AC discuss privately.

Real slow science, when you submit to a journal and get a rejection after 7 months is not as appealing as many people imagine.

Amen. The publication process responds to the community, which atm values fast science. If enough people call for the opposite, the (overstrained) system will be more than happy to oblige. Peer review committee did have the switch to fewer, longer review cycles as an option in the recent survey.

When I first started reading papers in ~2007 we would wait for someone who attended the conference to bring back the conference booklet and tell us what to read. We’d read them. And then spend the next three months reading old papers or working cuz 🤷 It was a great way to grow up.
