Update, it's also hay fever! Now I understand why so many people mask outdoors! (Including me as of this morning)

Thus far my only complaint about Tokyo is that the pollution is playing merry havoc with my respiratory system 🫠

When you’re having a tough day, cute birds are excellent medicine 🐥💗

We've been very well served by reasonable restaurant prices and a favorable exchange rate so far... so I felt enabled to Go Nuts at the Tokyo Tarot Museum 💸💸💸

What's this public art? Sarah has resigned herself to the mystery. (Couple walking by us also didn't know, white guy was like "What's that?" & his Japanese gf just went "...Ehhh..."

The guy at Perfect Beer in Kuramae told me I had to put the beer on the light to take a picture. "Light up beer!" You're so right dude

Butterbutt. An older comic.

A four-panel comic titled "yellow-rumped warbler poem". In panel 1, a yellow-rumped warbler stands on a branch in a late autumn scene, and says "Fall is here." In panel 2, the warbler watches a brown leaf fall to the ground, and says "Winter's near." In panel 3, the warbler faces the viewer as brown leaves fall, and says "Need some cheer?" In panel 4, the warbler is showing its luminous yellow rump, and cheerfully says "See my rear."

but especially in a novel you had better not expect me to read multiple hundreds of pages in which you've telegraphed in chapter 1 that no consequences will be harsh enough to matter unless you've written the most charming characters of all time

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

you know where I love a cozy tone? Fanfiction. I love to consume a media where everything is tense and perilous and dramatic, and then to read a story someone wrote where a couple of the characters have to go to a B&B together or some shit. I've written that! It's a good time!

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

coziness in real life is one of my primary aesthetic motivations for all my interior decorating. I strive for Maximum Cozy especially as the cooler months are coming on. also the vast majority of "cozy" genre fiction is something I would rather use to start a fire in my cozy fireplace than read

Now I'm looking forward to novel-length Floralinda after all my whining. It's not my cup of tea genre-wise but it does have a wonderful toxic character dynamic at its core that IS to my taste soooo

Baffled by discussions on Reddit etc. where people are discussing vacationing somewhere & they're like "ugh, I went to X location and it was full of tourists." Yeah, and one of those tourists was you! Sometimes people go to a place they aren't from for fun! 🤷‍♀️

does this mean I should read it? I didn't finish BG3 but I played enough of it to remember Astarion's Deal, so I could read it and report back if the discourse is sensible. of course I think the reason people are made is that fandom people are Not Normal about Astarion

010

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

sometimes, hypothetically, you start a story that combines all your childhood obsessions and childhood traumas and current fandom tastes, starring young people with big messy feelings. and sometimes ten years later you're in your 40s and would sure like to write about something else

020

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

this is also why series can be so dicey. sometimes I'm like, "why is book #3 a huge tonal shift from #1? why is the underlying ethos completely different? why are my favorite characters ignored in favor of ones I like less?" it's b/c writing novels takes forever and writers' tastes change with time

110

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

granted the endless Alecto delays only fuel my theory that some of the fandom generation of modern spec-fic writers approach their work with fandom's fickle limerence, and lose interest once they've aged out of whatever it was that triggered obsessive focus and feeling

120

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

if Alecto manages to stick the landing, it may make some elements of the story overall seem retroactively more necessary and exciting and cause me to view the overall story in a more positive light, so like, I should wait for that possibility

120

show me a chicken @myrioddity.bsky.social · 26/09/2026

I have some time to kill before meeting someone so I'm ruminating on the great injustices of life, like how I really want to write a lengthy internet-poisoned review-slash-personal-essay about the Locked Tomb books but can't in good conscience until I know how the series ends
