Today I learned that a legitimate scientific unit of an object’s coldness is “gigabytes per nanojoule”. Seems very weird until you consider that entropy can be measured as information. Nah, still remains weird.

For some reason, one of my retail PS2s has a “-2” DVD DSP chip. We have no idea what that means; retail systems’ DSPs normally don’t have a dash. “-1” DSPs are used in debug systems to allow Mechacon to override the CD key for “master discs”.
PlayStation 2 motherboard from a “D chassis” SCPH-30001 with a close up of the DSP chip, labeled “CXD1869AQ-2”.

We have dumps already for all PS2s that lack a FireWire port. Also, all North American retail PS2s are dumped already. (Debug systems haven’t been though!)

If you have a Fat PS2 that’s marked as ❌ in this list, we could use your help in dumping its Mechacon chip! You can use “PS2Ident” to get your Mechacon version number. github.com/spc970-dumpe...

The new dump technique requires burning a CD-R with a burner capable of “DAO RAW” mode. A corrupted “table of contents” is used to get the exploit able to read enough memory, and that requires raw burning mode.

Thanks to an exploit found by @libby.bsky.social, we can now dump Mechacons from all versions of PS2! A new dump method was found that works on 1.x Mechacon versions, which do not work with her current SPC970 dumper. I’ll release the new dumper soon after cleaning it up and writing instructions.

I think the answer might be “you don’t”, because the XPACLRI instruction has no effect if there is no PAC or the CPU doesn’t support it (reserved NOP space). So just always strip it. MSVC has an __xpaci intrinsic for XPACLRI.

ARM64 Windows 11 26H1 uses pointer authentication instructions, but there is no IsProcessorFeaturePresent flag to detect whether PACs are supported on the current CPU…? How do you know whether you need to strip PACs from backtraces?

I worry that the anti-trans ads in Texas paid for by billionaires will be effective in defeating James Talerico because of how anti-trans public opinion has gotten.

When I see the “SI” abbreviation used for “super intelligence”, this is the first thing I think of.
A historical picture of a bust of Benito Mussolini’s face on the side of a building in Fascist Italy. Surrounding his face are numerous copies of the word “SI”, meaning “yes”; the Fascists held a plebiscite to confirm continued Fascist rule and were “encouraging” citizens to vote “yes”.

Physics and biology just *have* to ruin everything fun. Mercury is fun to play around with, if you ignore the whole “extremely toxic” thing. Lead is very useful, but is also toxic. And now we’ll probably have to realize that rollercoasters cause brain damage. abc7.com/story/3-new-...

Three riders allege they suffered catastrophic brain injuries after riding X2, as attorneys say more than 100 others have reported possible brain damage.

Trump TV turning off YouTube comments ought to be illegal under the First Amendment: one of its enumerated rights is “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances”. Not that Trump not his minions care about the Constitution.

It looks like the ABI doesn’t allow r16-r31 to be declared as frame pointers, so at least existing code using RtlCaptureContext + RtlVirtualUnwind to make a self stack trace should still work even if APX functions are in the trace.
010
Myria @myria.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Was adding two nonvolatile registers to the Windows x64 ABI for APX really worth the hassle and risk of changing the format of the .pdata table? If Windows considered r16-r31 volatile, no changes would’ve been necessary.

I hear that a lot of the newer game decompilation projects use AI for doing most of the work… There are really AI tools that can do this level of work? I have no idea which ones people use.

Such a definition is valid even on MS-DOS, Win16 and OS/2 far pointers; 8086 segmentation is “flat enough” in all but the “huge” memory model.

Myria @myria.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
It would be nice if C/C++ had a macro that means, “on this implementation, adding to a pointer that’s cast to uintptr_t is equivalent to adding to a char* pointer when such arithmetic is defined”. In other words, a “flat-enough” address space for aligning math to be valid.

It is interesting that the PS5 Linux devs actually added support for execute-only memory to the Linux kernel. If you mmap() with PROT_EXEC but not PROT_READ on PS5 Linux, it works, unlike normal x86-64.

Myria @myria.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
I don’t know why AMD hasn’t released support for execute-only memory on their non-Sony CPUs. Based on the PS5 Linux kernel patch, it looks like a straightforward EFER enable bit and a new PTE bit 58 “NDA: no data access”. I’m guessing that there is a CPUID bit somewhere too.

I wish x64 Windows had an ARM64 emulator for testing. It’d be a lot easier to work with ARM64 Windows development without needing a remote debugger constantly. Until there are desktop-level ARM64 Windows machines available, anyway.

I wish C++ would standardize an equivalent of “#pragma pack”. It would be too complicated, though, because full correctness would require adding a third CV-qualifier (“unaligned”) and the mess that that entails all over the Standard and STL.
