Spent a few hrs book painting. It's been good for my soul & also a reminder that I'll never understand ppl who want to be "creative" without doing the actual work, testing things, learning techniques etc I've been slowly trying to get back to where I was when I painted regularly, and it's been fun.
Photo of my Witcher books, all pressed together so I can paint across all five book edges. So far I've managed a blue sky & the outline of mountains in the background. On the left side I have just started to add texture and all the little snow capped mountain tops & darker valleys.

I'm profoundly uninterested in ppl analyzing why one can/can't criticize her, or like her, or find her music great/bad. I personally hold her to the same standard I hold every industry figure with an enormous platform to, esp when they used the aesthetic of standing for sthg politically for profit.

Esp bc it was about T Swift. I really, REALLY do not want to know. I fundamentally do not care. I like her music as much as I like 90% of pop music, namely not at all. I like her the same way I like all billionaires, also not at all. I personally do not think criticizing her is "tearing down women".

Christ, how do I tell Insta algorithms that liking 1 humorous video of a creator I find entertaining does not mean I want to see 650 more videos about the exact same topic they were making fun of?! I remember the days when I thought social media was broken, little did I know how broken it could be.

Mh, I would really like to watch the Kill, Bury, Print documentary. But I think it's exclusively on peacock and I don't know if I can wrestle myself through another round of "how to watch it here" today. My God, streaming was supposed to be the future but it's just annoying & getting worse.

They did try to get them to a professional wildlife rescue station, but apparently they are all overflowing with abandoned hedgehog babies at the moment, so she got a sheet with care instructions and they're now doing it themselves at home.

It's genuinely the cutest thing I've seen in a long time and also her kids are going nuts over taking care of the babies. It's all just very wholesome and incredibly sweet.

In case you need something unbearably cute on your TL today, my colleague found four abandoned hedgehog babies in her garden, so she and her family are now raising them. Part of that is weighing them to check if they're growing well. And they do it like this. 🥹♥️
Photo of a small hedgehog baby inside a tiny little planting pot on top of the smallest kitchen scale they could find. The little hedgehog is barely big enough to look over the rim of the pot.

Baby, these are strangers to you. On the internet. And I understand in this true crime era everyone thinks they're an extra special special investigator of what strangers do & say in the privacy of their own homes, but so much of this is just... Really fucking unhealthy? And also deeply unsettling.

Like, esp when it comes to romantic & platonic relationship stuff that has nothing to do with court proceedings or anyone breaking laws or faces, it astounds me again & again how deeply invested people are and even more so, how much intimate knowledge they think they have about ppl's private lives.

People are being very weird about celebrity couples on Instagram again and I think few things are as disturbing to me as the parasocial relationships y'all have with famous people on social media. I mean, also in general, but especially on social media things get so deeply, deeply weird.

First time I had to go through US customs at O'Hare I think I was interviewed by an officer who was obsessed with Oktoberfest & I kept trying to find diplomatic ways to say "I hate that bs" which was absolutely infuriating after an 9hr flight with a 4hr delay, and my next plane leaving in 30 min.

Every time somebody tells me that this is the German culture ppl are proud of, I can only laugh bc sexist dress codes, overpriced everything, excessive consumption of alcohol & escalating violence? What a cultural event it all is. Oh, not to forget all the urine related issues. What's not to like.

Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
No matter how hard I try to not see, hear or read anything about fucking Oktoberfest, Google continually tries to get me to read articles about celebrities & all the other shit that I absolutely never want to know, but esp not during Oktoberfest. Everything I know about it, I know against my will.

I think language is important and words mean things, and that doesn't stop with justified outrage posts. And I am absolutely supporting everyone, especially survivors, who really just... Can't be surrounded by SA themed posts for several hours a day. I sure know I'm not in a headspace to do that.

Anyways, I think equating genitals with being either victim or perpetrator is a terrible thing to do. Making testosterone out as a deciding factor in who's a predator is ugly. I actually hate the war cry "Not all men, but always a man" very much. I think nuance is possible, especially with this.
140
Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
But there's also no real space to have the conversations about why they are problematic without it getting even more ugly in the spaces where things already are ugly. And it's not about taking the conversation away from cis women, as with most things it's about including the rest of us.
120
Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Part of it is the survivor thing, part of it is that a lot of these conversations venture into territories I just can't deal with in general. I understand the center of this particular conversation being cis women, my issue is with all the blanket statements surrounding it I find so very problematic

Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I understand the deeply horrified rage paired with all the other emotions ppl, esp women, are experiencing with the ongoing conversation started by the Cornell 7. I feel that too, but also don't feel like I can partake in that for more than a few minutes a day before getting up & away from my phone

And I'm pretty sure my grandfather, who was far from perfect, would've taken JCO's hand very gently to ask her if she was absolutely sure that she knew what she was talking about because none of it sounded right. Bc life experience is a big thing, but quod erat demonstrandum, it isn't everything.

Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
I think about that a lot. Because it has nothing to do with age discrimination or denying that old folks have experience & expertise in certain things. But it's about knowing when you stopped understanding the world you're living in so well that you can make expert comments on everything.

"Baby, I was born in this house before it had warm water or an indoor toilet. I grew up here, raised my family here, and yet also lived in 3 different countries, witnessed 2 deaths of nations. I went through & with a lot of change. Then I got old. Now I'm too old for everything, it's your turn now."

Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Because one thing he looked to say was "Honey, I'm too old for all of this." And he didn't mean it in a petty way or in a "I'm way too wise for that" way, but I'm a way that my grandmother still uses to this day. He literally meant that he's too old for most of the things we argue over today.

When I see people like JCO and others who are getting closer to the 100 than they are to 50, make statements and comments that range from incredibly ignorant to ridiculously misguided, I always wish I could sit them down with my grandparents. My grandfather especially, before he passed away.

Today conversations in the center were all about jobs and futures and options, but also the most terrible moment might've been the 15 yr old who looked at me completely flabbergasted when I didn't say yes to the questions "But isn't water endless? Like, we can't ever run out of water, right?" JFC.

Also I should not be thinking about a song about Texas I've never heard at 4am in the morning, so I guess all the chatter did what it was designed to do. 😂🫠

But also making classism arguments out of people knowing or not knowing songs in the top 100 billboard charts is objectively fucking funny on every level. Bc you have to grasp very hard, then swing very widely and it would still be a ridiculous argument dressed up in pseudo intellectual jargon.

I rarely touch artists I don't know anymore &never use any kind of discovering feature on any platform bc I'm too tired to research if it's AI. So it's less that I'm in a bubble I desperately need to get out of, it's more that I have specific tastes & avoid making listening to music a research job.

Also some rap when the mood strikes but that's because the point. My point is I stream music I like in genres I like and from bands I know, and have been buying a ton of vinyl when I really liked an album. Which touches on sthg that I haven't seen much which is I'm exhausted regarding new music.

But on an individual level: Why tf would I know a billboard song that is country/pop, when I'm a metal head with a melancholic steak, which right now means I'm listening to some indie folk rock & a fuckton of 90s pop+ 2000s emo/punk?! According to everything I know about it, I'm not the audience!

Mostly because I'm a music lover who's stubborn as fuck. But also bc I can't be brothered to engage with everything that is popular everywhere. I have a lot of theories & opinions about why we will never have the kind of monoculture again where popular in one place = mass phenomenon.

Mx M @mxmreads.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
I've read a bit about it, still couldn't be bothered to look up the song itself and the more people try to tell me that I'm either an elitist dick looking down on the working class for not knowing it, or alternatively an elitist dick living in a snobbish bubble, the less inclined I get.

What's funny to me in this whole discussion abt the Texas song, the great swings it tries to take about classism & the "you live in a bubble" argument is that it's so quintessential American & also absolutely ignorant of how music, culture, industry & media work in 2026. It's actually really wild.

Yeah, exactly that! And I'm not convinced all if this isn't messing with her epilepsy too, but her various doctors aren't communicating well, and her ability to do it is rapidly getting worse. It's just... Yeah. Fingers crossed we'll get something figured out bc this is not sustainable.

Right now it's hard bc she's so convinced she just has to "just get through it", but my younger sibling is already trying to convince her to take them with her/ let them drive her to the next appointments so they can be part of the conversations. If all else fails we'll try to convince her together.

Thank you, I hope so too. My younger sibling and I are also planning for a little trip in January in the hopes of either helping her recover or if all else fails, to try to convince her to take my sibling with her to the doctor visits so they can ask more questions & advocate for her.

It's terrible to witness. The whole family is trying to get her to advocate for herself because this is the second time they're trying this treatment and she's even more miserable now. But she's scared to speak up & she's also struggling so much mentally, everything feels impossible. It's awful.

At an outing a couple of weeks ago she got so weak in the knees at a soccer game, it felt like I was trying to get an 85 yr old down to her seat, not a woman in her late fifties. It's physically painful to watch her struggle so hard with sthg others will tell me is the new miracle "cure".

My mother, who has struggled with what diet culture & skinny obsession have taught her most of her adult life, is now as skinny as she's ever been, for the small prize of being miserable every day. She's also never been as unhealthy & unfit as she is now.

Spending an afternoon with her now consists of watching her trying to have a small piece of cake & a cup of coffee but being unable to finish both. She's lost so much weight, things like dizziness & cognitive struggles are the daily norm. And let's not forget about the debilitating nausea.
