"Dass Journalisten als Wegbereiter des Rechtsextremismus agieren (aus Opportunismus oder weil sie vernarrt sind in False Balance), ist keine Überraschung. Ungewohnt scheint es mir zu sein, dass es jetzt Journalisten gibt, die ihrem Publikum sagen: Glaubt ja nicht, was ihr gesehen habt!"

A diagram of the world's tallest buildings: the Empire State building, the Petronas Towers, all the way to Burj Dubai. Yet there's also another challenger who's entered the fray: because shadowing Burj Dubai stands 'MERL Bluesky pig', reaching almost 700m high.

I arrive here having finished a major, multi-month project: creating a posters in a hachure style reminiscent of centuries past. Have a look: terrainlines.etsy.com. There's a free ebook, too! somethingaboutmaps.wordpress.com/2024/10/31/a... If you could share them around, I would be grateful!
A black and white sketch of Mount Hood, seen from a roughly ground level view. It is in a black frame, and on a blue background. Off to the left are a vertically stacked series of smaller images, too small to read. Each is different-looking, but all are black and white miniature versions of posters. The miniature version of the Mount Hood poster is highlighted in white.Sample images of three monochrome posters each prepared in a line drawing style. One shows Mount Rainier, another Katahdin, and the last one shows Devil's tower. The posters are stacked on top of each other and the Mount Rainier one is partially rolled up.A detailed zoom in of a hachured representation of the Presidential Range, with peaks labeled.A vertical-orientation poster titled "The Seven Summits" — it shows black and white sketches of seven different peaks, the highest on each continent. The peak sketches alternate between being positioned on the left and the right side of the poster. Next to each is a label naming the mountain and giving its location. The poster is framed on a blue background.

Bertin has something similar, like this oddity. Don’t have my Bertin at hand but I think it is called a ”Chart map”. (from nicolas.kruchten.com/semiology_of...)

Immigration: how do countries measure it, and how accurate is this data?
Bar chart showing the number of immigrants in several high-income countries — the total number of immigrants and the number without legal status. Immigrants without legal status are a small minority in most countries — though the US stands out, with an estimated 22% of its immigrant population lacking legal status.

Color version of the 1701 map from the Princeton Library. Gotta love those palm trees! static-prod.lib.princeton.edu/visual_mater...
“A New and Correct Chart Shewing the Variations of the Compass in the Western & Southern Oceans as Observed in ye Year 1700 by . . . Edm Halley” [London: s.n., 1701?] Copperplate map, with added color, 56 × 48 cm [Historic Maps Collection].

In 1698–1700, Halley’s explorations in the Atlantic Ocean aboard the fifty-two-foot Paramore, from about 52° N to 52° S, led to this printed map, the first of its kind and the first to use isogonic lines, showing equal declinations of the magnetic compass. It became a model for how to show geographical observations and is recognized as one of the most important maps in the history of cartography. Halley and others felt that data maps like these might solve the longitude problem for seamen, as they could look up their locations by comparing their compass readings to those on the map. Unfortunately, such readings are not stable over time because the earth’s magnetic pole shifts. And Halley’s own longitude readings were unreliable.

Immediately after the devastating floods in Spain, fake news arised that dam removal in rivers contributed to the floods. An article by our @merlin-project.bsky.social partner Arturo Elosegi rejects these false claims; in fact, dam removal helps flood prevention. verifica.efe.com/dana-inundac...

For the multiple people that suggested using a receipt printer. Not perfect, but readable! Will be a fun challenge designing a new map that works within the limitations.
Part of a river map being printed from the top of an Epson receipt printer: black plastic cube with roughly 7 inch sides. The visible part of the map says Pinhook Swamp on the right while the river can be seen as a thick black line to its left.
