it's so disgusting that it made me forget how poorly the book was written. fine, make the argument that 'at least people are reading', but if this is the shit people are reading and rating five stars, i'd rather they just didn't read anything at all.

i didn't expect for this book to make me so genuinely angry, but it did. i'm furious that coho writes misogynist, abuse apologia like this and that readers lap it up like it's the pinnacle of its genre. i'm furious that this is so demeaning to disabled people and yet it's rated so highly. #booksky

i'll gladly eat crow if it turns out lowen is evil and therefore we're meant to condemn her ableism after all. but yeah again this very much reads as the author's opinion rather than just the character's. (feel free to correct me if i'm wrong, or if i'm wrong i'll delete the thread lol)

i had to laugh at the scene where jeremy, who has been portrayed as a sexy likable man, finds out that one of his kids might be autistic and his reaction is one of total panic like that scene in girl meets world where the kid's potential autism is treated like a terminal illness by his friends.

i assume a twist is going to be that verity is faking her disability, which will be awful on top of lowen calling her an ableist term and lowen pitying/admiring jeremy for having to stay with his 'egg without yolk' of a wife who she's creeped out by at first for no reason other than her disability.

like i'm fine with thrillers with a narrator with awful views (see: eva in we need to talk about kevin). i think it can be so interesting to read from that pov. i know there's a difference between a book depicting awful things and condoning them. and it's easy to tell when it's one or the other.

i've not finished the book so maybe there's a twist that recontextualises lowen as an awful person after all, but as she's saying ableist things about a disabled woman (or a woman she believes to be disabled again i'm not finished with the book), we're meant to see her as a relatable pov character.

ordering a suit online for my dad's wedding and i'm pretty sure i'm gonna have to learn how to take up trouser legs since i'm 5'2" and fat and there was no option to get trousers with shorter legs. i don't know how well the jacket's gonna fit me either but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
