#DinnerTonight was an attempt at spinach pide. Neither had quite the right shape but they were fun to make and tasty. recipetineats.com/pide-turkish-flat…
Two homemade pide before baking. They are filled with spinach, and are more long and skinny than boat shaped. Two homemade pide after baking. The filling is darker and toasty, and the openings have widened out. Bread is lightly browned.

Got 90% of the way toward buying a new car (an EV!), and then backed out at the part where I sign the loan because I'm fundamentally opposed to fees. (Fees are theft. It's how rich people become rich - not by working, but by stealing tiny amounts of money from a large number of other people.) […]

@janef0421 living up to your potential is the bane of the gifted, I think. I too have had that conundrum. Eventually I realised that living an authentic life that makes me happy is far more important than other people's expectations.

My morning commute starts out with lots and lots of going east. For the past month, I was walking it while waiting for the sun to get high enough up that I could scoot or bike without being blind. But wait! Daylight Savings! Let's instant replay the whole sun in my eyes thing for another month! […]

@Niall I took a closer look at the packaging of the tofu in tonight's dinner, and it has a website. So I went there and it turns out they have a factory in Auckland. Whodathunk! It was on sale, $4 for 850g (in two blocks).

@Niall hmm, not seen that one before that I know of. The Asian supermarket is where I'm finding affordable tofu, and the packaging is in various east Asian languages, so I assume it's imported. Meanwhile the brands in the standard duopolies are in English with the usual obligatory origin […]

@libroraptor I don't recall learning that. The War of 1812 immediately makes me think of Tecumseh. But I suspect a lot of what history people learned depended on what state they learned it in. I briefly dated someone from Connecticut who said they never made it past the Revolutionary War in any […]

Today I learned that the tune to Battle Hymn of the Republic, which is a patriotic song that children learn in the US, is also the tune to Solidarity Forever. Last night we sang the latter to close out a union-hosted political debate, and my brain was short circuiting on the words. >.>

@MichaelaKHulse Dinner here was remarkably similar: one can tomato sauce, one can coconut cream, one cup red split lentils, two tablespoons curry powder and one of turmeric, and some leftover roast buttercup pumpkin. @pezmico okay serious and possibly dumb question... if we are producing 40 million people's worth of food, and there's only 5 million of us, where is most of it going? I assumed it was mostly exported but is it all going to landfill (which is what the policy on their website seems to imply since […]

@pezmico They should also implement a domestic quota system, whereby food exporters are required to fill 100% of domestic demand before they're allowed to send anything overseas.

Update: I went back to the store and got it swapped out with another one. Then I cooked and ate the new one, before it could swell up at me. There were two other packages of tofu involved in #DinnerTonight that were always fine. Mapo tofu uses up a lot and then we eat so much of it at once that […]

Umm... so... What do I do if the tofu has clearly produced a ton of gas in this package?
Block of tofu packaged in plastic. The plastic is a bulging bubble, when it normally would have more of a shrinkwrap appearance. The box it came in is behind the tofu bubble.

Spring has sprung. There's useful sun reaching the ground in the front yard again. It only lasts a couple hours so far, but long enough that it's worth putting out the solar farm.
Three portable solar panels in a gravel yard with some greenery and a wooden fence in the background. The electric generator is in the shade behind them. Like all electric generators, it's a small box about the size of a desktop tower computer, and not a big loud smelly contraption like most people think when hearing "generator."

Update: I've just found out that there's an electricity plan available at Genesis that would allow charging an EV at ChargeNet stations for the same price as home charging. It occurs to me that if we were to guillotine one NZ billionaire and divide up his $billion equally amongst the other 5 million of us, we'd each have $200 million. So... I guess the best way to improve my personal lot in life is to bring down capitalism.

#DinnerTonight was spinach feta gozleme (www.recipetineats.com/gozleme). I slid the slider from four servings to two, and wish I hadn't, because the proportions of dough ingredients came out really weird, and then I improvised, and the end result wasn't quite right. Overall it was […]

#DinnerTonight was an attempt to make "falafel" out of very old pinto beans. I pressure cooked the beans first, which might've been a mistake. I aimed for Mexican spicing (cumin, chipotle, cayenne for extra heat) with onions, garlic, capsicum, and cilantro. Otherwise went with the normal […]

@Niall Agree with you on the lack of innovation at the uni/industry level. I think that's basically what I'm saying, some form of how I figure it should work ought to exist, or have research in progress somewhere. I'm in no position to carry out any expensive experiments, it's all just "gleam […]
