Film 18 - Rose - Quietly devastating and deeply moving, a film which explores the hypocrisy of a patriarchal society, and feels as relevant today as in the time period it is set. Goes without saying that Sandra Hüller is phenomenal. 10/10. #lff #filmsky

Film 17 - Being Heumann - An engaging look at the early days of the US disabled rights movement, which at times veers towards patronising but is kept on track by the strong lead performance by Ruth Madeley. A shame that Ruffalo wasn’t given more interesting material. 7/10. #LFF #Filmsky

Film 15 - 14th - does a great job of breaking down the current threats to the 14th amendment in the US. But the rah-rah cheerleading finale feels rather hollow in the face of it. 7/10. #LFF #Filmsky

Film 14 - Gentle Monster - an unsettling film about women trapped by the actions of the men in their lives and the lies people tell in order to try and justify unspeakable acts. Not an enjoyable experience but an urgent one. 8/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 13 - Bunker - while it all feels a bit too neat and tidy in its mapping out the relationship dynamics at play, there is no denying that Cruz and Bardem have great chemistry. For all its flaws, the film also builds up to a tense and satisfying finale. 8/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 12 - ANIMOL - an at times grim but always empathetic look at life in a young offenders institution. At times some of the performances feel a little stilted, but then Stephen Graham pops up to provide a bit of dramatic weight. 7/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 11 - Dependence - a deeply personal and intimate exploration of a father’s addiction, and its impact on those who loved him, shot by his semi-estranged daughter over many years and delicately woven together. A small film but one that resonates. 8/10. #LFF #filmsky

Fascinating screen talk with John Malkovich, on one hand he shared lots of interesting tidbits about his past work on the other hand he also clearly holds his cards pretty close to his chest on socio-political issues. #LFF #filmsky

Film 10 - Paper Tiger - really nails the period aesthetic and vibe. Occasionally plods but more often claustrophobic and emotionally tense and the family dynamic really works. Miles Teller is (surprisingly?) excellent as hardworking family man hopelessly out of his depth. 8/10. #lff #filmsky

Film 9 - In the Shadows - unlike the films protagonist, there is nothing groundbreaking about this film, though it does shine a light on the UKs Somali community. However it’s engaging enough, and is underpinned by a strong performance by Jasmine Jobson. 7/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 8 - Kettice - after a strong and rather amusing opening, a film that rather outstays its welcome in its rambling approach to showcasing bored teens doing what bored teens do ad nauseam. By the end I was as listless as the film’s protagonist. 4/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 7 - Lemonade - a film made with tender loving care that takes an honest but ultimately hopeful look (maybe too much so) at the challenges facing a young man Leaving Care. Lewis Brophy shows enormous massive promise here, while Barry Keoghan is his usual excellent self. 8/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 6 - The Last Day - this tale of two struggling suburban mothers is a bit too aloof and enigmatic for its own good at times but it is underpinned by two very solid lead performances. 6/10. #LFF #Filmsky

Film 5 - Elsinore - while the film itself at times veers towards a narrative clunkiness, there is no denying the sheer force of nature that is Andrew Scott’s performance, and the films heart is so throughly in the right place it’s easier to overlook its flaws. 8/10. #LFF #Filmsky

Film 4 - The Man I Love - Malek and Sturridge deliver heartbreaking performances in this tragically tender elegy for those who were lost during the height of the AIDS epidemic, though it’s subplot feels like something of an unwelcome intrusion to the piece. 8/10. #LFF #Filmsky

Film 3 - Wicker - an absolute hoot from start to finish, this raunchy fairytale also succeeds in being heartwarming and deeply human with a satisfying twist in the tale. The ensemble cast is simply immaculate. 9/10. #LFF #filmsky

Film 2 - La Perra - the themes of lingering trauma and resilience, but it sinks in to melodrama towards the end. Bonus point for the tremendous doggie co-lead - the extended scene of him running free is the films high point. 7/10. #lff #filmsky

Kicked things off with Water Body, an immersive experience hosted by St Martin-in-the-Fields. A rather lovely exploration of the hidden flows of water through the planet. A relaxing experience for those wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of the festival. #LFF #Filmsky

Queen at Sea - Binoche and Courtenay are terrific in this quietly powerful drama tackling some of the largely unspoken ethical and legal issues around sex and dementia. It’s largely sensitively handled but does have a few clunky moments. 8/10. #filmsky

Super Nature - an intimate exploration of humans relationship with nature through the use of global wide gathered Super 8 footage. While it doesn’t offer much in the way of new insights, it’s made with such tender loving care it really doesn’t matter much. 8/10. #filmsky

Back from a little trip to Bath, the feat of engineering behind the 2000 year old plus Sacred Spring at the Roman Baths , which can produce over a million litres of hot mineral water daily at a constant temperature of 46°C, is surely a definitive example of sustainability.

Lady - this mockumentary style film about the titular Lady Isabella, a seemingly self entitled aristocrat starts out being very funny and ends up being very sad. Maybe tonally it doesn’t quite gel but Sian Clifford delivers a wonderfully rich performance that holds it all together. 8/10. #filmsky

The Odyssey - a breathtaking and captivating rendering of Greek mythology that surprised me by capturing it in spirit as much as style. One or two of the main cast don’t quite work, but wonderful performances in smaller roles, especially Morton’s Circe, largely make up for this. 9/10. #filmsky

Fun afternoon at the BFI yesterday for the 50th anniversary screening of Bugsy Malone featuring a lovely introduction by producer David Putnam and a post screening q&a with the cast. Dexter Fletcher and Bonnie Langford were sitting near me and were like a couple of big kids throughout 😂 #filmsky

A rare actor in that he could pull off the role of hero and villain, and every shade in between, with equal aplomb. His performances in Dead Calm, The Piano, and And Then There Were None were my personal favourite, even if Jurassic Park will naturally enough be his most iconic role.

Paired this with a screening of Don’t Bother to Knock at the BFI, a film made when Monroe was on the rise but had yet to become a film star. The film as a whole feels tonally uneven, and really rather rushed, but Monroe’s performance as an emotionally disturbed babysitter is compelling. #filmsky

Very much enjoyed seeing Pride at the National Theatre today. Like the film that preceded it, it’s a little clumsy in its execution at times, but so heartwarming as to make this kind of moot. I don’t often cry at theatre but I cried A LOT today.

Every time I do this little mid Devon hike this property is just that little bit more dilapidated and it makes me sad. Pictured on the left you can see how it was on street view 17 years ago when it was quite a sweet little cottage.

Allies in Exile - in its brief runtimes, this deeply personal short film conveys both the brutality of the waiting room existence in asylum hotels alongside the comradeship that allows for a measure of hope even in dark moments. An important and timely film. 9/10 #filmsky

Saw The Misfits at the BFI yesterday, the film as a whole is kind of messy, but my goodness do Gable, Monroe, Clift and Wallach shine. Though it’s hard to enjoy a film which has such a tragic spectre hanging over it. Some of the dialogue is just painful when you know what was to come. #filmsky

Tuner - a gem of a film which, if you will excuse the pun, strikes all the right it notes. Hoffman is in excellent form as the elder mentor, while Woodall excels as the piano tuner turned safe cracker who gets himself in hot water. Deftly edited with an interesting use of sound. 9/10. #filmsky

The Mandalorian and Grogu - the first hour or so works rather well - a mildly thrilling opening, an engaging set up, with some cute little moments along the way. Could have wrapped up in 90 minutes or so and been a satisfying little film. But alas it plods on. And on. And on. 4/10. #filmsky

The Christophers - Anchored by two stellar performances from Ian McKellen and Michaela Coel, this is a bittersweet, engaging, take on artistic authenticity and legacy, even if the money grabbing sibling subplot increasingly feels intrusive. 8/10. #filmsky

1st time viewing of Crimson Peak, which I found to be such a striking film visually even if narratively I find it rather clumsy, especially towards the end. The Shape of Water feels more poignant than ever these days, when its core message of compassion for others feels so out of reach. #filmsky
